And any other information I might want at this point is welcome Hi , Your hubby probably has type 2 diabetes. Diabetes affects each individually different. Some people can eat more carbs than others. some people can control blood glucose (bg) with sensible eating and exercise, while others need to be on meds. Even some type 2's are on insulin. Here is the link to the Joslin Diabetes Website. This website has lots of good information. http://www.joslin.org/education/beginnerguide.shtml There is a lot of information. Don't try to remember everything at one time. Don't let it overwhelm you. As you read this information, post any questions or comments you may have. hugs Eunice
Guest guest
Hello, my name is and my dh was diagnosed with diabetes just yesterday. I can't tell you much except that his sugar was 486 and the doctor told him normal was 100. Is that as bad as it sounds? The doc said that if he loses weight and takes some pills that he probably won't need to have shots. He won't get a class until about 2 weeks from now and the only thing the doc said about diet was stop drinking Coke. Does anyone know which type diabetes this is and will he have to be on a special diet of no sugar? And any other information I might want at this point is welcome. Thanks in advance,
Guest guest
welcome to the group. Based on the description your DH is probably a type 2 because it is being controlled by oral meds and exercise. The only way to know for sure is with a C-peptide blood test to determine if he is still producing insulin. A very good basic book is Diabetes for Dummies. I can not tell you what he can eat however restricting the carbs in the diet can be very helpful. Remember carbs turn to glucose in the body very quickly and that will cause blood glucose levels (BGL) to rise. We as 21st. century people do eat way to much, if we cut our portions in half and do not get seconds with exercise we will loose weight. I know because I have dropped from 260+ to 190 in 2 years and have kept the weight off. Diabetes is one disease that we as patients do have a great deal of control over. Denial is a very big problem and many men do have a problem dealing with anything that is related to as they see it " a possible weakness " (YES I went thru this). Has his Dr mentioned testing BGL several times a day? Also has he been cleared to start an exercise program? I know that he is scheduled in 2 weeks to take classes, have him read as much as he can and have a list of questions for the team. An informed patient is a compliant patient. IMHO herbal supplements do not " cure " diabetes, beware of people trying to tell you " if you take XXXXXX you can get rid of diabetes! " . As always YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) Vern Catron www.history-buff.org <http://www.history-buff.org/> Meddle ye not in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup (or HP). Guest guest
Hi , As a diabetic myself I have found the Diabetes Assoc. of America, the best resources for information. http://www.diabetes.org/type-2-diabetes.jsp And follow the food pyramid. This is proven to work. Remember it's what you eat in combination with other things. The exchage list will help you. I keep a printout of all the exchanges on my refrigerator. I can look at the list, see how many of what I need & just pick off the exchange list. Monitor after you eat, see what steps up your glucose levels & then figure out which item you ate to make it so. You can find out what foods work best for you. I have a problem with potato. Rice works great for me. http://www.diabetes.org/nutrition-and- recipes/nutrition/foodpyramid.jsp Good luck!
