Guest guest
AmyLynn, Welcome to the list. I am Wendi 29 SAHM to Kaija 7yo girl and nursing Zaid 16 mo boy. I just joined this list yesterday and have been interestedly (is that a word? LOL) reading the posts. I thought it might be a good idea to introduce myself. My name is AmyLynn, and I'm a SAH mom to an almost 5 yo that I am somewhat homeschooling - mostly through workbooks, computer programs, and unschooling. I fit in here though because we are still nursing. I've attended LLL for 5 yrs now and do sewing on the side to make a little extra $$. So far, I pretty much exclusively sew nursing clothes from the patterns by Lee. I have also been a tester for one of her patterns. We also do the family bed, but it's almost time for that to stop. We have a king-size bed, and there's almost not enough room for the 3 of us - DS is an " active " sleeper. I'm willing to try to keep it up though until DH throws a fit or one of us falls out. Nursing will also go for as long as Alan wants to nurse. Knock on wood, he has never been sick enough to have to go to the doctors. Mostly the sniffles. Anyways, I look forward to reading everyone's posts. Guest guest
Marcia, I think it’s wise to wait till after their anniversary. You might start by telling them what the weight is doing to you. If you’re morbidly obese, I’m sure some Dr. Has told you about all the health problems you should expect in the near future, and how your life expectancy is shortened. Hopefully, this will worry them enough to see how surgery will help you to have a longer healthier life. Be prepared for how they will react, and know that it’s normal and that they’re just scared. Once it’s over and you start to feel better, your parents and husband will most likely be thrilled! Good luck, Alice A.
Guest guest
Hi Marcia, There are so many options when it comes to the tell/do not tell decision. I chose to tell my family only because I felt that weight loss surgery had been given a bad rap for far too long. I wanted to cast it in a more positive light. That being said...I put a spin on it and yeah, I lied to some members of my family. I told them that the doctors I had told me I needed this surgery to avoid future health problems. (The reality is, my aunt on my father's side had a RNY several years ago and *I* went to my primary care doc. asking for the referral) I waited until I had a solid date and explained that my primary doctor had referred me to an obesity specialist and the obesity specialist had made me undergo psychological testing and that I had to see a nutritionist. I covered all my bases and said that all of these specialists said it was in my best interests to have this surgery. Then I took my mother to a supoprt group meeting with me to see that yes indeed, people survive weight loss surgery and go on to live happier healthier lives. I also made sure I answered any questions she had and I explained the surgery thoroughly to her. Although they were fearful and concerned, they know now it was the best decision I could have made. I didn't tell my oldest (she is 8) until after I told the rest of my family because I didn't want her opening her big mouth either It was harder for me to explain it to her because I didn't want her to think that I was undergoing a drastic procedure just to be skinny. I worry so much about her body image. We talked about all the things I couldn't do because of my size and how my weight is making me unhealthy, and how theis surgery would help me lose some weight and get more energy. She was cool with it except she just didn't want me to leave for 4 days. For the most part everyone I've told has been positive and suportive (except for one friend, but even she has come around) and as everyone says...you're doing this for you, so don't let anyone else change your mind or make the decision for you. Good luck (And welcome to the list!) F. 6/5/00 Open RNY Dr. Bruce Thayer 277/238/150 Marcia wrote: Hi there, I am new to your list. I am scheduled for surgery 9-28-00. I need a bit of advice. I have yet to tell my mother of my decision. I am my parent's only surviving child so needless to say if I even get a cold it is seen as a major calamity. This should totally flip them out. I do not plan on saying anything until after their 50th wedding anniversary party (about 2 weeks before the surgery). My husband is being very supportive although he is worried. My kids are to young to understand so I will wait to tell them as well, besides I wouldn't want them to tell grandma and grandpa. Anyone have any advice ? momcat@... Guest guest
Hi Sally, and welcome! Glad you found us...sometimes we get a bit nutty, but it keeps us all sane . My name is Dawn, I'm 1 year post op TODAY (yipee), had my surgery with Dr. Sheldon Randall of Lawrence Memorial Hosp., Medford, Open RNY. My beginning weight was 433 lbs, I USED to be 5'10 " , however, since I lost weight, I'm now 5'9 " (must have lost an inch in my heels/head..hope it was the heal, I can't afford to lose any in the head - NO COMMENT JO!). Today, I have lost 175 lbs, as I just weighed in w/my surgeon for my 1 year follow-up yesterday, and I must say, it was MUCH more than I had hoped for a year ago. The beginning stages were rough at times, seemed so bizarre to me to take a sip of water, and feel satisfied, but knowing I had to consume my daily requirements, but not wanting to. As the weeks went on, adding soft foods (as my surgeons plan is), a teaspoon here, a teaspoon there, just did not seem possible to satisfy an overgrown woman as myself, but it did, and it really freaked me out (in a good way). Slowly but surely, I increased my intake to a tablespoon, eventually adding a bit more as time passed. You MUST walk as soon as possible after surgery to get the body moving, otherwise, you'll get cramped up and not feel like walking (I learned the hard way). I still can't believe that one year ago today, I was in the hospital, surgery would have now been over, and I was now a " new " woman. Time flies, and my habits have changed a great deal, and I can honestly say, I HAVE NO REGRETS what so ever. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, and remember we're all here to answer, help, listen, or just simply " vent " whenever you'd like! Good luck and welcome aboard! Dawn aka: Blondie Open RNY 8/9/99 Dr. Sheldon Randall Lawrence Memorial Hosp. 433/258/1?? New to list Hi everyone, My name is Sally MacDuff. I live in Needham, Mass. I am 53 years old, married to Doug, an Architect, and have a 24-year-old daughter, Alyson, who will be getting married in October. Busy times around here regarding wedding. Today, I went for my first consultation with Dr. Bruce Thayer and staff at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, MA . I have a number of medical problems, and I was afraid that I might not be able to be a candidate for WLS. He thinks I can have the surgery. He does need to talk with my gastroenterologist, also there at NWH, as I have Barrett's Esophagus, a precancerous condition of the esophagus. I also have two adrenal gland problems requiring steroid replacement therapy daily (Prednisone - a killer weight-wise), but he thinks that can be managed. during the surgery with extra boosts of steroids to keep me going. I went in to the visit thinking that I was going there for a consultation to see what he would think about my having the procedure. After being there for three hours and seeing the nutritionist, psychologist, and Dr. Thayer, as well as talking with people in the waiting room, some who had just had the surgery and others who had had it a while ago and they were beautiful. Now, I am a little more encouraged about the surgery for me. He said he would have to talk with the gastroenterologist, and also I would need an upper GI barium swallow test. I was so encouraged by the people in the waiting room who had the surgery. They gave me this email list addy, and I just had to contact you all to introduce myself, but also to hear from various people about their thoughts/results/whatever. My husband is worrying about this and thinks it is a little " extreme " , but is willing to go with me to the mandatory Group Session held Monthly. Dr. Thayer encouraged that we both come to learn as much as possible. So, I guess I am introducing myself, saying hi to all of you, and saying " tell me all you know " - giggle. I have lots to learn. An immediate question concerns the diet immediately postop (for his practice everything is pureed for the first month). Then, how does it go? I think I have rattled on here enough. Ask me questions. I naturally weighed more there than I thought I weighed, and they didn't tell me my BMI. I weigh 240 lbs., am 5'2 " tall, so it is, I think, around 43-44, somewhere in that range. I will be quiet now. Thank you for any input. Sally
Guest guest
Dear Lyssa, Thank you so much for replying. I did, in fact, get this list's email addy from Worth. I think it is wonderful. You have done so wonderfully. You must be pleased. I will really need to learn to slow down my eating and really chew when that time comes. I tend to eat too quickly. It is nice to meet you. You have young children. That is nice. I felt like a grandmother sort of in the waiting room today and actually asked the dietician " Am I old for this? " She said no. That they have many people in their 50s and early 60s. I am planning to attend the September meeting and hopefully my husband will come along too. I showed him pictures and talked with him at great length tonight so he has some understanding of it now which he didn't before. We won't be able to attend the October meeting as it falls on the night of our daughter's wedding rehearsal. Anxious to see what the September one is all about. I understand that I have to go to at least one in order to have the surgery, but that they are helpful to attend before and after for the support, information, etc. Well, thanks again for writing me. I really appreciate it. Sally LyssaF wrote: > Sally > Welcome!
