Don,

I have read about others who have learned here about avoiding ablation of the

AV node. It appears that some doctors are still recommending that. You're

right that it wouldn't be the end of the world, but it would be the end of your

chances of getting out of afib. As my cardiologist explained it to me when I

was considering that option about five years ago, after AV node ablation, the

heart still registers afib rhythm on EKG's. One would still be in afib, but

the pacemaker would regulate the beat so that the symptoms would be

eliminated. Having such an ablation would mean not being able to take advantage

of any

new procedures that will undoubtedly be available in the future. You probably

know all of this, but I thought I would mention it again in case anyone out

there is considering AV node ablation and pacemaker.

: Well put! Ed B's idea of forming a special group for those with

chronic afib is an excellent one but, as someone with

chronic/permanent afib, I would certainly want to stay with this

group as well. Were it not for what I learned in this group, I might

now be walking around with a pacemaker and an ablated a/v node. That

wouldn't be the end of the world but I'd rather be the way I am for

the time being.
