It appears that some doctors are still recommending that. You're right that it wouldn't be the end of the world, but it would be the end of your chances of getting out of afib. As my cardiologist explained it to me when I was considering that option about five years ago, after AV node ablation, the heart still registers afib rhythm on EKG's. One would still be in afib, but the pacemaker would regulate the beat so that the symptoms would be eliminated. Having such an ablation would mean not being able to take advantage of any new procedures that will undoubtedly be available in the future. Ed B's idea of forming a special group for those with chronic afib is an excellent one but, as someone with chronic/permanent afib, I would certainly want to stay with this group as well.
