Hi Ellen - This is absolutely true. More than one doctor, nurse has commented

on this. Therefore, they use the large cuff on those who have larger than

average arms.

Hi Ellen

I think the only way you would get a false reading would be if the cuff was

so tight that it couldn't relax far enough to get to the lowest reading.

I second that - my daughter is an RN & one of my best friends is my family Dr. -

A regular cuff on a large arm gives false (high) readings. It is surprising to

me that many times I have to tell the person to use a large cuff - at the

hospital & cardiologist !

Would you in turn get a false high reading if the opposite were true - if a

large cuff was used on a average arm?

My daughter thought a large cuff on a regular arm would give false LOW readings.

She said their rule of thumb is that anyone over 200 lbs should be checked with

a large cuff.
