well, we were never promised a rose garden. i'm trying today to remember

the torture m mom went thru prior to dieing with poor circulation, going

blind, and an amputation (none due to diabetes--i'm adopted BTW), and i ask

myself if i want to end up like that, just wishing to die. she could not

even clean herself up after going to the potty. that, to me, is a poorer

quality of life. so i'm trying to think positive: i can have all the

fresh vegies (ok, almost all) that i want; i can have sweets (just different

than before); i can have bread (also different); and i can have meat.

now, i don't have to floss because of all that stupid popcorn (and i don't

have greasy fingers); i don't have to worry about all that chocolate melting;

i don't have to bother taking the silk from the corn. lol i miss some

things sooooooooo much i want to cry (die), but i'm trying to remember my

mom, and the fact that diverticulitis kept her from corn, and what happened

when she had some before the doctors told me to not feed it to her; and i

remember my aunt who went blind (macular degeneration) and had ropes around

her house to guide her around, and could not leave those four walls without

anyone. and i imagine the pain mom felt looking down at a leg that was not

there. and then i go get celery and thank god that i can do something about

this disease, other than wish i was 'normal.' pat (really trying but still

p*ssed, lol)

i also need to get a dental appt. BTW, miss " daughter of dentist " , for a

diabetic, is just a regular old tooth brush sufficient, or are we better off

using one of the electric goodies or something else.

i do worry about going toothless too pat

Hi, the following is part of a conversation that took

place on TheDiabeticMale

Yahoo discussion group. I thought I might share it

here as well.

-----------------------------------

I think you hit the nail squarely on the head as

far as I am concerned when you said that sometimes we

just

have to loosen up a little bit to maintain sanity -

but then resolve to do better

after the little " splurge. "

I read these posts by some people, i.e.: " I splurged

today

and ate an extra carrot stick and my blood sugar shot

way up to

110. I was such a BAD girl! "

I don't know, maybe some people are better able to

exercise

rigid self-control 24-7, but I just can't do it and I

really don't want

to do it because it makes me greatly frustrated and

unhappy with living.

I'm like Rick, I sometimes let myself have a little

splurge, but try to

get back to good eating as soon as possible when the

splurge is

over.

Here's the cosmic question......is it better to live

five years longer

because your big splurge was an extra carrot stick or

is it better to live five years less and be able to

enjoy a big

container of popcorn every once in a while at the

movies? This is a

question of quality of life, not just extending the

time of living. Food

is one of life's major pleasures. How can one enjoy a

good quality of

life while denying onesself the pleasure of eating

24-7-365 days

a year?

I know I can't.

Jim

i am an excellent cook and i have a full time cook at home who cooks my

daily meals but i don't equate that with life's pleasure its a necessaty.

but yes eating is enjoyable because of our association of events with that

particular food. popcorn for u is movies for me its when i was not in the

mood to make anything more elaborate. food spends 8-20 secs in your mouth

then its all the same in ur stomach and out the other end. an extention on

life is seeing ur children grow, seeing the world evolve, spending time with

grand children and living an active life where medical concerns don't

dominate ur every move.

my parents live independently and go on holidays 3-4 times a year they live

an awsome life because they took care of their bodies and health all their

lives. my dad has had hypertention since he was 23, he's 71 now. quality of

life can come only if u watch out for the quality u give ur body. just my

view cheeky

Hey Pat...you still need to floss...just not because of the stupid

popcorn!

Vicki, the dentist's daughter, smile...

Vicki,

Exactly... flossing helps prevent gum disease :-)

I very much enjoy the game of trying to keep my bg's low. This week my

bg's ranged from 89 to 130. My two week meter average is 106.

,

I don't know if I could say I enjoy the game, but it is a challenge, and I

do enjoy it when I'm winning :-)

Great! Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Vicki :-) I know I sure feel a lot better than when I first

joined this list... I didn't say then, but I was a little frustrated and

depressed about my high blood sugars, and low carb was a last resort for me.

Thankfully, it's working :-)

Hmmmm....black raspberries are one of those elusive things you rarely see

for

sale.....unless you happen by a kid on the side of the road.

I know, ... I think I've only eaten them a few times in my life, but

oh.... they were so good :-)

Soon it will be

blackberry season and right now is raspberry season. The raspberries we

grow

are a very tender variety...nothing you could ever buy in a store. They

are

also EXTRA yummy ;-) Drop by and pick some ;-)

If I'm ever in Vermont, I'll do just that :-))
