Guest guest
I had our family tested for the Celiac Gene & test. I wanted to know who is it possible to have it & what side of our family did it come from. Turns out both my husband & I carry the gene & so do 2 of our 3 kids. We have 2 endoscope diagnosed celiac children. Testing Siblings What is the opinion on this? My son was diagnosed recently and I prefer to have his brother and sister tested, my husband doesn't. Maybe it is just a piece of mind thing for me, any opinions are welcome. Thanks!! Patti
Guest guest
Patti, As soon as my daughter was dx, the doctor very strongly recommended having my other two children tested. They both came back positive. Next, he wanted to test my husband and myself. We both came back positive. That was 5 out of 5. We were stunned to say the least. Next, my siblings were to be tested. I have a sister and my oldest brother came back negative but I have one brother who hasn't been tested yet. (It's been two years) Next, we were told their children were to be tested. My sister's daughter came back positive, her son negative. My oldest brother's children were both negative but we already knew that because they grew up in Italy and they were tested before they could enter school there. My other brother who hasn't gotten tested, obviously has not tested his children. Now that we know what even the subtle symptoms are, I would bet money that he and his son are positive. His daughter, at this time, seems to be symptom free. I would say it is vitally important for the whole family to be tested. We didn't know how lousy we all felt until we began to feel so good. Being dx Celiac has been a blessing and even though most of us weren't displaying obvious symptoms (yet), by catching it so early, we have saved our children and ourselves more medical problems down the road. Guest guest
Most doctors recommend testing all first degree relatives, which would include not only the siblings, but also you and your husband. I would highly recommend testing everyone, because untreated celiac disease can cause a host of problems other than just gastroenterological (hope I spelled that right!) In our family, my husband, his father, and the father's cousin all had retinal blood clots which caused irreversible blindness. Not that that is likely to happen to your family, but why put off the testing when you can prevent problems? That said, his sister and mom still haven't been tested, despite both having multiple symptoms. Wish there were a way to convince them, but they don't want to know.
