Tam... diagnosed 1 yr 7 months , type 2. Seems like longer cause I was very

sick for about a year before that...not knowing what was up.

I take glyberide once daily and metformin once daily.

Do some exercise, some control with diet.

I still have a long way to go to keep bg in great shape, but for now in

normal range on A1c. Lately tho bgs have been higher due to stress.

okay, that's all for now. lol.

Tam

I was diagnosed with type 2 Feb. 10, 2004. I control it right now with

diet, meds, and exercise but my doctor said that if I bring my numbers

and weight down a little more he'll take me off the meds.

To Sharon in CA - why do you have lousy control?

I am type 2 just diagnosed Feb 2004 with original highs in February

hovering around 300. Have been pre-diabetic for about 2 years we think.

Had borderline gestational diabetes 7 years ago during my pregnancy.

Long history of type 2 in my family so I came into this well informed.

Presently both hubby and myself and my mother are type 2.

Lost mom's brother to major complications (amputations, blindness,

dialysis, finally heart attack) 8 years ago. So we know the harshest

worst case senario.

I control with Metformin (aka Glucophage) and Glipizide (aka Glucotrol)

and am doing ok averaging 80-140 bg's now. I test many times a day.

Hubby is in denial, refusing to test, refusing meds. Metformin once

daily was prescribed 2 years agowhen his bg's were over 350 and it

really helped but was abandoned after 6 months once he got his bg's down

to 140. But the switch to diet sodas alone have kept his average bg's at

160.

Mom, diagnosed 4 years ago, lost 60 pounds and went off the Metformin

and is now just diet and exercize controlled. She tests just once in the

mornings usually.

I am hoping to eventually lose some weight and get off the meds too.

So that is my history.

Diabetes discovered July 2002 during pre-op blood tests for bone cancer

surgery with a fasting of 125. Levels in low 200's while I was in the

hospital. Officially diagnosed as type 2, two months later. The doctor

wanted to see if my BG's would come down on their own, and that perhaps they

were stress related to the cancer and surgery, but they remained slightly

elevated. Lost 55 pounds in the first 4 months after my surgery, (I was very

ill) and have since put 25 back on and can't seem to get it to budge down

again. Need to lose about 40 lbs. Diet and exercise controlled for now,

although my BG's have been slowly creeping up over the past year. Will

receive latest A1C results in June to see if I need to be put on meds. Last

A1C four months ago was 5.9. Walk 2-5 miles per day, depending on how I

feel. Sail as often as I can. <ggg> Currently in remission from cancer.
