Eunice, don't know about the part of country you live, but

meadowlarks build nests on the ground. I also don't know if they

chirp at night.

Our Jack (otherwise worthless dog, lol) kept barking and

barking the other night. I finally called hubby from computer work

to come home and help me flip up the dog house. I had went out back

with a flashlight and cell phone (in case of intruder hiding in dog

house) and Buddy was circling the dog house, digging and barking.

When hubby got home we lifted it to discover a baby opossum to be

hiding in the foundation we created for the house. Craig and I could

not stand to watch Buddy kill it, so we locked the dogs (also have a

black lab, now she's a good doggy!) and Craig tried to flush out the

baby. It hissed like a cat and didn't wanna leave. We FINALLY got it

to go through the chainlink into the neighbor's yard. I was hoping

our toothless, clawless killing machine (yes, she does bring home

many a prize, as neighbor says, she must have a mandible crush

technique) was not near.

We live in a 50+ yr old established neighborhood in the middle of

the city limits. There are homes around us for miles. Yet my

neighbor had a racoon living in her house last summer and we have a

possum visit our trash often.

I find watching the birds and squirrels in our yard relaxing too. We have an

albino squirrel in our yard that I especially love watching. It always

scolds me when I sit on the porch.

There's even more wildlife at the marina where we keep our boat; deer, foxes,

pelicans, cranes, raccoons, turtles are just a few of the critters I've

spotted. There's a nesting pair of bald eagles in the trees just across from

the marina. This past weekend, a pod of dolphins swam in from the ocean and

cavorted just off the end of the docks. And now that the marina has

floating docks instead of fixed ones, the alligators stay in the water and

can't climb up onto the docks to sun. Nothing more startling than

discovering a gator guarding your boat.

Eunice--

My mother in law is a bird enthusiaste. I asked her about the bird you

mentioned and here's what she told me: She said that it is probably just

what is called a " night bird " . She couldn't recall the correct name, but

she says it is more than likely a female because it is her mating call. I

was also told that it will probably go on all summer. She uses windchimes

to drown out the noise. Either way it is noise (windchimes or bird), but at

least with the chimes you can enjoy the sounds.

Hope this helped a bit.

Hugs,

Sharon in CA

We have ruby throated hummingbirds here. Won't be too long before I

have my feeders out. They feed on the flowers.
