Guest guest
Hello everybody! First, does generic metformin 500 mg tablets from Labs smell like vanilla? It's an odd question to start with, but I had a bit of trouble at the pharmacy. Here's how it happened. Dr. Edno prescribes Avandamet 2mg/500mg (we're lowering the metformin content to see what happens). HMO doesn't LIKE Avandamet. At all. They didn't give me permission to take it, so on the way to diabetes eduction classes I waltzed into Dr. Endo's office before he left (startled the heck out of him, because everyone else had gone!) and got a script for Avandia 2mg and metformin 500 mg. And that's where the fun begins -- Dr. Endo may be a Nazi (he wants my bg range from 110 to 130!), but he's also a poster child for why calligraphy classes should be Continuing Medical Education. I go to the pharmacy where they'd been struggling with the HMO over the Avandamet prescription, told them to try this one. Then I walk out, have a double espresso (I had about 3,000 words to proof and edit and add fun things like currency conversions that evening), and come back to pick up my pills. After (yup, I should check these before) I write the check I check the pill bottles to make sure they're alright, and I see they've given me Avandia 8 mg! " Oh no, not again! " I think. I don't know what I said except it was loud and profanity-free. The pharmacy technician, the pharmacist (who eventually clears things up by saying " He knows what he's taking " ) and I squabble over whether that's a 2 or an 8 on the prescription slip (from what I recall from two-decades-ago paleography and history of mathematics classes, it looks more like a 2 in classical Arabic orthography than a 2 as English speakers are used to, but it also look a lot more like a 2 than an 8! Odd, because Dr. Endo's native language IS English), so I've already got a head of steam up when Pharamacy Technician says something to the effect of " They don't make Avandia in 2. " No reference to a book or database or drug list -- just says it. goes from steamed to so livid he has to maintain some semblance of detatchment by referring to himself in the third person. gets pretty demonstrative, and starts using vigorous arm gestures to punctuate remarks. Punctuates other remarks by pounding desk. still quite sure he didn't use profanity. GlaxoKline DOES make Avandia in 2 mg, by the way. But, after that astounding gaffe (nastygram written to pharmacy manager, copies to pharmacy HQ, Dr. Endo, Dr. Primary Care Practitioner, Diabetes Educator (who needs the reminder that I write world-class nastygrams), Registered Dietician (who could use a good story to cheer her up, poor lady never smiles) and HMO (wanna make sure they get billed for Avandia 2, not Avandia 8!)(nastygrams and carbon copies already in mail, too late to stop me), is it any wonder that I want to make sure metformin tablets smell like vanilla?
