Unfortunately, this attitude becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. I can't count the times I have heard someone say, " Well since I had a drink and am powerless over alcohol, there is no point in trying to stop the slide right now. They have been so brainwashed that they have no control after picking up, that it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy! From my own personal experience I know this is not true. Also, a segment of the " treatment professionals " are moving away from this attitude also. In spite of what a lot of people think, there are quite a few people in the substance abuse field who disagrees with a lot of what goes on at 12 step meetings. Hopefully one day, this idea of complete powerlessness will be negated.
