Hi Meg-

Boy, does that bring back memories!:) Our is 5, but I

remember those days clearly! We sprinkled the creon beads on a spoonful or

two of applesauce and gave it to him. I'm sure rice cereal is fine too. One

good thing about the applesauce is that we could easily put it in one of

those tiny tupperware containers and could go wherever we wanted without

worrying too much about keeping it refrigerated.

How are YOU doing? Take care of yourself too.

Meg-

I forgot to mention the Zantac- do you have any of those plastic syringes

without the needeles? They are great for giving accurate doses of liquid

meds to little ones. I have a bunch if you don't- you are welcome to them.

If so, email me privately with your snail mail address and I'll send you

some.

Take care,

Debi

Meg

I have a 7 week old, Celia, who was diagnosed prenatal, so she has been on

enzymes from early on. She seems to need a lot, so she gets 3 capsules of

ECS 8's mixed in a tea spoon on apple sauce thinned out with water. We

spoon the mixture into her mouth, she does quite well with this. She is

also on Zantac, we measure it out with a 2cc syringe that can be picked up

from all pharmacies for less than a $. Ask the pharmacist.

Hope this helps

We never had to worry about it as an infant. We always used apple sauce,

whipped cream (very good) or whatever was handy... even ketchup. He learned

around is third birthday to swallow the capsules, so it is not an issue anymore,

but there are alot of things you can use, so long as the child will eat it.

Rich

P.S. I have not sent any attachments myself, but my wife may have. I do not

really know.

Re: enzymes

Our CFer was on the then equivalent of Zantac, thank god. (I take a new one,

Aciphex; she now takes Previcid. Giving her enzymes was easier in the old

days

because Cotazyme came with a powder in the capsules and we just picked some

yummy thing like Baby Peaches baby food and swirled it in and she fell for

it--re-

jected rice cereal, however, tears. Good luck with this.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi,

just some thoughts about the current enzymes-thread.

Every ingestion system works differently. The food goes through the stomach and

the bowel at differents speeds and the acidic conditions are different too.

The enzymes themselves work slightly different too. They go through the stomach

at different speeds and they dissolve in the bowel at different pH levels.

Therefore a change of the enzyme brand makes sense, if something doesn't work

well. And keep in mind, that runny stools may often be related to a malfunction

of the enzymes, but other reasons are possible too.

Regarding the question of overdosing and fibrosing colonopathy I am still trying

to figure the problem out. At the moment it is my understanding, that the

problem is more related to the enteric coating of the micropellets than to the

dose. Some brands like Ultrase are coated with a substance called Eudragit,

which is an acrylic acid and might be poisonous at high concentrations. Others

like Creon are coated with cellulose, which hopefully is harmless.

Another theory says, that high-strength enzymes in combination with Ibuprofen

have caused the fibrosing colonopathy.

Hope this isn't too confusing! I would love to have certainty about the drugs

our kids have to take.

We are also watching the lipase dose and have been able to leave the dosage

unchanged for two years now. This makes sense, because Fiona eats always the

same. And to me it is a prove, that the intake of fat is important for the

dosage and not age or body weight. She eats 10 grams of fat at every meal and

gets 5 Creon5, which is much Creon for the small amount of fat. In relation to

her body weight, she gets 75.000 - 90.000 units at 16.5 kg (36 lbs), which is

not very much.

Bye-bye

Torsten, dad of Fiona 3.5wcf
