When begin having problems with her vision we were seen by

THREE ophthalmologist. She was just starting fifth grade and had never

had any problems with writing or being able to see words in her

books, all of a sudden she could no longer write on the lines of

paper, or see the words in her books. She also could no longer tell

colors. The first said there was nothing wrong with her vision,he

suggested we see the neurologist. We did ,he said see a

ophthalmologist.WE did. This one (JERK) told us there was nothing

wrong with vision, the only thing WRONG was that did not know

her letters or numbers.I then asked her Pediatrician who he would

recommend. This third doctor told us ,in about two minutes , that the

problem was Retinitis Pigmentosa. He also told us she would never be

blind, this was April '93 her vision was 20/80,in Sept.'93 her vision

was 20/600.She does not have " garden variety " RP,she lost her color

and central vision first. This was also what started us looking for a

cause of her problems.Mitochondrial Disorder!

What I'M trying to say is JUST because someone is an ophthamologist

does not mean they know everything. If it doesn't sound right to

you ,keep looking for the answer. Also check with your regular doctor

for his/her recommendation. Good Luck,
