Right on, Judith!

People who take Tylenol for their headaches feel no need to bully and

harass those who take aspirin. I know lots of people who go to

chiropractors, but they don't give me shit for using a regular MD. Some

people lose weight by dieting, others by exercise, still others do

both. None of these three groups has a major superiority complex over

the other two. So what's the deal with AA? Why the predictions of

certain doom and hostility toward those who don't want to do it their

way?

The nicer people in AA will tell you that the AAssholes like Cowboy Bob

and HigherPower/Femstroker/ are just " sick " or " imperfect. " The

implication is that they were shitheads when they came into the Program

and they just haven't made enough " spiritual progress " to escape their

shitheadism yet.

I don't buy that. I believe the hostility toward other rehab approaches

was 100% implanted by AA. Almost no one walks into " the rooms " thinking

that 12 Steps is the only way. The prejudice against secular methods

must have been programmed into these zombies through AA. I don't

necessarily blame the Big Book, because it's written in fairly flexible

language. I think this programming is more a function of unofficial AA

culture -- the unwritten rules and attitudes that sprang up after AA

got to be the 800-pound gorilla of the rehab zoo.

(Apologies if this appears twice. Getting funny messages from the

Well said, Jim.

It surprises me to see AA'ers here. Why would someone who

is " working a good program " be hanging out in 12-step-free?

Bob, I should have been more specific. The Big Book at least pays lip

service to the idea that AA doesn't have a monopoly on recovery. Yet

the AA fanatics, who claim to live by the book, say AA DOES have a

monopoly. But you're right as far as the God angle is concerned. No

flexibility there.
