<< I had a tooth pulled yesterday. A baby molar on the bottom left

side. The second molar. I feel awful. Very swollen face and in pain.

How long will the pain last? And swelling? >>

Hi Sussie,

I'd love to know the answer to this question too, as I'm in the same

place you are right now! I've been fighting a losing battle with my

bottom right wisdom tooth for several years now; it periodically

becomes inflamed and uncomfortable, but I've been putting off having

it extracted. This time, the infection was so severe that the pain

was unbearable, and I had no choice. It had to come out. :( I'm not

certain how long the pain and swelling will last; I'm just reaching

the 24 hour mark, and I'm still in a lot of pain. It's funny; I have

a script for antibiotics and one for Vicodin, with an instruction to

take every four hours as needed for pain. Well -- let me tell you, at

three hours and fifty five minutes, the pain slams back full force

again!

I haven't eaten very much -- I bought some egg pastina (my all-time

favorite comfort food, with an egg mixed into the cooked pasta) and

had a small portion last night, but so far I've had nothing today --

and no coffee or tea either. My dentist's office gave me a sheet of

" what to expects " and " what to dos; " regarding swelling, it indicates

" peak of swelling is three days, then will subside slowly. " Have you

tried using an ice pack?

It also mentions elevating your head on two pillows when lying down.

Drink plenty of liquids; maintain a soft diet. smaller but more

frquent meals may be required.

Are you taking any pain medication? If that's the case, you might

want to be sure to take in something every few hours, in the event the

medication bothers your stomach.

Also, my sheet mentions possibly developing a bad taste in the mouth,

sore throat and increasing moderate to severe pain on third to fifth

day. Call your dentist if this persists for more than one day.

Most important: REST! I hope you're feeling some relief soon.

Believe me, I understand.

On wednesday, I just had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled as well as a benign

growth under the back of my lower jaw. This whole thing took almost 2 hours..

The day before surgery, I had to start pennicllin and vioxx( a painkiller). I am

still taking both of them, pennicillin every 6 hours and vioxx at night. They

also gave me another painkiller to take evry 4 hours along with a anti anxiety

pilll to take 20 minutes before. All they are doing is making me drowsy. They

hardly work and I am so puffy, my face feels and looks like a basketball that

just got into a whole court game in the NBA. The surgeon even said that these

next 2 days will be the worst to handle. but should be better by monday.

I did all this, so I can get braces. My wisdom teeth were in bad shape and I

needed the space, as my orthondontist mentioned., so they sent me to a surgeon.

Sussie,

Did the dentist give you a prescription for pain pills? You might

try ice pack on face at tooth location to help with the swelling.

I need to have some dental work done. I have at least 1 broken

tooth. I will have to have a root canal and a cap. Expensive and

not bothering me a whole lot so I'm putting it off.

Love and blessings,

Millie

Thanks Deb, so there is light at the end of the tunnel? I am just

worried about the nerve damage and the chance that it could be

permanent. They said it could be but they have hopes on the feelings

coming back. Its creepy and is painful too. I had not only the socket

pain but they went in and cut the gum under another tooth and tunneled

in to get the tooth from the bone. It broke in small pieces and that

incision is what is painful..its not even right under the socket but

under a good tooth?.......gosh knows what they did.

Sorry to be so graphic but I want you all to say " poor sussie " :-)

Im too a baby....but it does hurt darn it!

Hi Sussie,

I m a real baby when it comes to pain and in a couple days...

my swelling was down and nearly gone and not much pain..

So it should be anytime now u will be feeling much better.

If it s any consellation I had to eat baby food for a week! once they

were all pulled.

I did 1/2 my mouth one week then 1/2 the next. Then ate baby food.. It

was not fun
