Guest guest
Hi Everybody, I'm taking your advice and going with the A list. I just spoke to Dr. Steve Cohen and wanted to check if anybody had any experience dealing with him. Would I be in good hands? He says he's done lots of Asherman's (but doesn't keep track of the number), and the technique he would use would depend on the results of the xray histogram. Anybody out there have any experiences (good or bad) with him? Thanks
Guest guest
Meagan, I have seen Dr. Cohen. Luckily he was able to break through the scarring at my cervix and I did not need surgery. I really liked him. He performed both a HSG and diagnostic hyst on me. I found him to be very gentle and patient (and funny). I have put my AS issues on hold the ;ast two months, life has been a little overwhelming. I will be following up with him as well as getting a referal at the end of this month for a good RE since it appears that there is no longer scarring in my uterus just that my lining appears to be very thin and is not shedding. There was a member that met with him that had a different opion of him than me. Choosing a doctor is a very personal thing. Personally I would recommend him, but keep in mind he did not perform surgery on me, my hyst was diagnostic. Good luck. Karin
Guest guest
---Thanks Meagan. I'm glad it worked out for you and you avoiding the surgery. The different opinion of him......what do you mean? Did somebody have a bad surgical experience? Once I have to travel to the U.S., are there some A doctors people would recommend over others? Guest guest
Hi Myra, My name is Lori, and I am the person that decided not to use Dr. Cohen. I live in NY City, and wanted a doctor close to home, but I think your decision to use Dr. Valle is probably a good one. If you have the option of choosing any doctor, and since you are travelling anyway, you may as well go with a doctor who has been well liked by all. I know that he has an excellent reputation and has cured several women on this board. I saw 3 different doctors, as well as e-mailed with Olive. The specialist that cured me (I am now scar-free) is Dr. Glenn Schattman who is the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility at NY Hospital/Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. This is a well known fertility center, in fact it is where Celine Dion went for her in vitro. His number is . He is a surgeon in their group, and specializes in all uterine surgeries. He was my specialist from the start, after I was diagnosed with moderate scarring following a cornual ectopic pregnancy in June 2000. I stayed with him after researching many other doctors. I was cured after 2 surgeries, the first both lap/hyst and the second hyst with a balloon catheter inserted plus hormone treatment. I am now trying to conceive. My 2nd opinion was with Dr. Alan Copperman, who is a specialist at Mt. Sinai in NYC. He trained directly under Olive. I liked him alot, and probably would have seen him if I wasn't already seeing Dr. Schattman. I asked him about the A-list doctors. He said that Dr. Neuwurth had a good reputation in his day, but was now somewhat of a " dinasour " and at this point did not do as many surgeries himself. He did not mention Dr. Cohen. I then opted not to see Dr. Neuwurth, but did go for another opinion with Dr. Cohen for peace of mind, to make sure I explored all of my options. I know that others in this group have had great experiences with Dr. Cohen, and I am sure he is excellent. Personally I did not hit it off with him, and felt that Dr. Schattman had much more experience with uterine surgeries, since that is his specialty. Dr. Cohen was very impersonal with me and my husband, and did not make a very good impression. I personally didn't feel that he was as knowledgable as Dr. Schattman. But again, I am just one opinion out of many, and I'm sure he is excellent. I e-mailed Dr. Olive about my choices, and here is what he wrote ( I cut and pasted this from his email): " Dear Lori: You have picked two excellent physicians! Dr. Shattman is a good friend, and DR. Copperman trained under me. Their opinions are solid. It frequently takes several surgeries to cure Asherman's, and the balloon/estrogen approach is the best validated. From what I know of your case, it seems like the best approach. Good luck. Dave Olive " Well, thank goodness it worked for me. Best of luck to you, and please let me know if you have any questions. The other thing I would recommend to you is to use the Archive search option at the top of the message board to do any additional research on specific questions. For example, if you put in " Dr Cohen " every e- mailed message that includes his name will come up for you. This is a great way to search something specific. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Lori, Would Dr. Olive consider Shattman and Copperman A list? The way I frame this question to an A list doc is the following.... "Would you send your daughter or wife to this guy if she had a severe case of Ashermans?" and then I wait for an answer. Do you think you could e-mail Dr. Olive and ask him this? After that, if he says yes, I would like to add them to the list. If you can do this it would be great. Thanks alot Lori!
