Guest guest
-----Original Message----- From: Leona Just a year after my surgery I was diagnosed with PSC. Could there be a link Who knows, I’m not a doctor, but I doubt it. I don’t think the liver injury people get from a Tylenol overdose is the same as PSC. Don’t think they have the bile duct problems, but go straight to cirrhosis. Also, Ken has never taken a Tylenol and he has PSC. But again I’m not a doctor so could be wrong about this. -Barb in Texas - Son Ken (30) UC 91 & PSC
Guest guest
Hi Leona; I agree with Barb that it is probably not related. The following article goes into great detail about drug-induced liver disease, and Table 5 of this article indicates that acetaminophen can cause massive necrosis resembling fulminant hepatitis. As Barb mentioned, it would not cause the characteristic bile-duct injury seen in PSC. http://merck.micromedex.com/index.asp? page=bpm_brief & article_id=CPM02HP373 (you might have to cut and paste these two lines of the URL into your browser address bar to take you to this article). Guest guest
From what I understand, the end result is the same in reguards to the liver damage. They both result in liver failure. You can also see the same type of rise in your liver enzymes. Typically with the tylenol liver damage your ALT and AST go up. Your GGT may also go up, but it is very sensitive to so many things that the doctors do not pay much attention to it. The ratio of AST/ALT is about 0.5 (for tylenol). My ALT and AST were the first enzymes to go up so they were investigating tylenol as a possible cause however my ALT was higher than my AST which eliminated tylenol. There is a lot of research out there on Tylenol and its relation to liver failure if you are interested. I hope this helps. > > My GI has told me to take Tylenol for pain when needed which I do > but not all the time.Scared to take pain killers and usually suffer > it out. > > Now when I read all this information about Tylenol makes me > wonder. Guest guest
Now when I read all this information about Tylenol makes me wonder. I have osteoarthritis and for years prior to having my hip surgery lived on Tylenol and Tylenol 3 along with anti-inflammatory pills. Just a year after my surgery I was diagnosed with PSC. Could there be a link Leona ***** Leona, I lived on Excedrin for pain, but I doubt that it triggered my PSC. Stress might have something to do with it though. Take a look at the article I posted earlier. Message no. 64323 Andi
Guest guest
Thanks all for your input. Feel better that this probably wasn't caused by all the tylenol I was taking. When you go for a number of years with bone rubbing on bone, which happens in cases like mine, and you are in constant pain you take what you have to for some temporary relief. What a wonderful group this is. you must spend hours researching everything. Leona
