I've got PCOS and hypthyroidism as well. I've lost 35 lbs since starting thyroid medicine and going on SBD. However, I'm in grad school and have gained back 5 lbs since the start of fall semester at the end of August. I turned in a 30 page paper Monday and am now finishing a 20 page paper for a different class. Between classes and kids, I haven't stayed on SBD in a couple of months at least and have decreased my exercise level. I also haven't taken the Metformine in a couple of months. I have terrible carb (especially ice cream urges) but when I was in the SBD mode I was able to control them and lost weight rapidly. My endocrinologist recommended SBD and I believe that it works even for us PCOS/thyroid problem girls. I'm not sure what to recommend to your friend except that when I was motivated during the summer to lose weight it worked very well. It's only with school stress that my routine was interrupted. I plan to go back to my SBD and exercise schedule next week when I finish my grad classes for the semester (and hopefully stay on it in the spring because of a lighter class load).

Unfortunately women that suffer from PCOS are at increased risk of diabetes and cardiovasular disease. When the dr. explaned all this to me I stuck to SBD religiously and lost alot of weight. Sometimes fear is the best motivator.

Good luck!!

That sounds similar to me. I had two children in my twenties and only developed PCOS and thyroid probs in my thirties. We looked at having another child a little while ago but despite losing almost all of my weight gain, the endocrinologist thinks that getting pregnant will be difficult and may result in me becoming permanently diabetic. My grandfather suffers from diabetes terribly and I don't want to go down that road.

By the way, the weight loss helped my body to go back to normal but it did not get rid of all the problems associated with PCOS. It did help tremendously though.

Anyone else on here have PCOS? I have a friend who has it and she says she

could never do SBD because of the incredible carb cravings she has because

of her PCOS. Is there anyone who has it and has persevered through the

problems and made it?

Yike. Yeah, that's another problem she's having. She's been married 2

years and is trying for a kid now but having incredible problems with it,

probably mostly related to PCOS. I don't know if that'll work out in the

long run or not.

From what my sisters doc said, she won't be able to get pregnant again, and it's lucky she had 2 before it set in. But, it might depend on how bad it is, not sure.

Just wanted to let all of you w/ PCOS know that it is not hopeless to have a baby. My sister has two kids (16 and 13) which she was told she would never have. Then she has all of these tumors inside that they were watching b/c they could rupture and cause real damage.

Well guess what, she is due any day now and the tumors are shrinking b/c the hormones are going to the baby.

Miracles do happen. Don't give up hope. She did not seek any medical help to get pg it just happened...

That is a hard situation. I think people just need to get well strong enough that they will try things on their own and not rely on other things. I have so many reasons to be obese - obese relatives, PCOS, hypothyroid, heck they even said I have exercise induced asthma, and i've had bad attacks last year from it. But I don't give up! I wish more people had more confidence in their own abilities to heal themselves through diet, exercise, and positive thinking.

I don't know what to suggest to change your friend's mind. That's a toughie, because people need to be able to go into these things by their own internal need.

I don't think she's made a real big conscious effort to change her diet much, either -- I think in a lot of ways she's expecting the drug to be the "fixer" for her overweightness. I'm trying to convince her to go on SBD but she's also convinced that she wouldn't be able to follow it, that the lack of carbs would drive her crazy. I've told her that isn't the case, but she's not yet a believer. Still working on it! :)-----------------------------Maybe we met yesterday...www.nathanpralle.com-----------------------------Reminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat.
