Dear All with Aspirin Questions:

Tim R. and Dave have pointed out the risk of esophageal bleeding in End

Stage Liver Disease (ESLD) and Aspirin. I might add that certain GI

doctors will recommend that aspirin and aspirin products be avoided by

those with IBD (Crohn's or Colitis) because of the risk of ulcerations in

the intestinal tract.

The following is from the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation website on " How

to maximize the chances of retaining a remission. "

http://www.ccfa.org/research/info/maintenance

" Many common over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers have been

shown to cause ulcerations in the intestinal tract, and may prompt a

relapse. Unless you need these products for a serious health reason (such

as heart disease or stroke prevention), you should avoid taking them.

Always question your doctor if the following agents are prescribed:

aspirin, including enteric coated preparations (Ecotrin®); and

non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil,®

Motrin,® Aleve,® Anaprox,® Naprosyn,® Daypro® etc.). The new " COX-2 "

inhibitors (Celebrex,® Vioxx®) may also be " off-limits " for IBD patients. "

As recommended above, I would think that aspirin product use ought to be

cleared with one's GI.

Best Wishes,

Shauna (29, AIH'86, Crohns'95, PSC'99, listed @ Duke, MELD =19)
