Guest guest
Hi, , welcome to the group. I hope you've also checked out obesityhelp.com, there's a wonderful amount of information there, too. Each doc is different, and a lot of their responses are going to be based on their knowledge. Mine is definitely a " minimalist " when it comes to medical care, so her response was positive, but she really preferred I do something less invasive, like the Gastric band. And on the way out she was telling me about a diet center in town she thought was very good. Just didn't get it at all - if diets worked, I'd be thin, for sure! <G> Pam in Niceville preop Lap RNY 11/20/02 Dr. Champion/Atlanta NEW TO THE GROUP HELLO EVERYBODY. Guest guest
, My doctor, the first one, was not quiet supportive of the surgery, she was worried about the after effects and such. One of the nurses in the office had it done, and she was surprised by the results and began to look more into it. By the time she left for maternity leave last year she was all for the surgery. My doctor now that took over my case seemed happy with my choice of the surgery and has been pleased with the results. Alot of the insurance approval depends on what type of insurance you have and stuff. I had medicaid, and it took like eight weeks to get approved. Getting back to work and stuff depends on how fast you recoup. Most take six to eight weeks. sabrina5482002 wrote:HELLO EVERYBODY. Guest guest
hiya sabrina, welcome to the group. lots of wonderful people here. i had open rny 6-14-01, 8 days after my 33rd bday. i am 5' 1/4 " and weighed 268lbs. i was lucky in that my doc recommended the surgery to me after tried many avenues to lose weight. after my last daughter was born i weighed around 170 and just kept gaining and gaining even tho i worked out almost daily. i fell into a depression and the weight would not come off. i tried weight watchers, redux, phen-fen, meridia, slim fast, the cabbage soup diet, atkins diet, you name it so my doc put in the request for referral and 4 mos later i was on the operating table. seems a lot of ppl tho do not get in as easily as i did. i have health net of california (hmo) tho they are leaving the county at the end of the year and currently will not pay for me to see my surgeon for any more follow ups. due to the hmo, my out of pocket cost was $10 per doc visit and $200 for the psych eval. i don't know of any insurance that covers the psych eval. the surgery was like $90,000 (hospital/doctors) but insurance paid it all. i've had few complications. at 2 weeks post op i started throwing up the protein mix, tried a bunch of different kinds finally went onto soft foods and carnation instant b-fast but had probs with that since milk doesn't digest well after rny. i found a soy protein powder you can cook with at 4 mos post op and have used that ever since. i hit my goal weight shortly after my 1 year anniversary and then dropped the last five pounds within a few weeks of that. i tend to waver up then down 2lbs but i don't worry about it. i work out at least 3x a week on my bowflex and i walk a lot. my meals center around protein but i allow myself a little " junk " if i want it. i take trinsicon (iron w/b-12), multivitamin, b-12 supplement, daily i would do it again in a minute. please feel free to email me anytime. i facilitate a wls support group here in california. good luck to you!! {{hugs}} kate
Guest guest
Hi - Welcome to our wonderful group. So glad to have you with us. The practice of intubation is still used by some doctors. We all have it during the operation, but most of us wake up with it out. If you have bigtime sleep apnea or breathing problems, it should make it easier to breathe while the anesthesia is wearing off. The other tube for 4 days is that that a naso-gastric tube? I didn't have to have one, but I guess they help keep your stomach feeling good after surgery. Do you have an angel? Jeanne in WI Age 39 Open RNY 05/21/2002 314/ 262 /150-175 5' 8 " djgraves@... Guest guest
Welcome Terri. Glad to have you with us. We have another Terry in TX, too. You don't have to wait until you know for sure that you are having the surgery. Just showing an interest in the surgery is enough for us. We will keep you in our prayers that everything goes through with your approval. It's going to be the beginning of a whole new life for you. Now is the time to try some protein samples from www.vitalady.com. You can buy a one serving sample to try without investing in a whole big can of protein powder. Keep us posted as to your progress. Guest guest
Hi. I am also new to the group, but not to low carb eating. I think we have all been down that path--I'll start tomorrow, or next week, or after my birthday. There's always some excuse! I agree, the Holidays can be really rough, but I don't remember seeing anything in the book that says everyone must absolutely start with Phase 1. DH and I started the South Beach in Feb. 2004, due to major concerns about his health. Previously, whenever I needed to lose a few (usually that same ten pounds!) I would eat similar to the South Beach, so it was easy for me to adapt. I have not regained that ten, after losing it again, and DH has lost 40+ so far, with a total goal of 60. We started on phase 2, and have only added back a bit--more fruit, whole wheat pasta, baked tortilla chips once in a while. We have both gotten serious about going to the gym, and are losing inches as well. If you can't commit to Phase 1, why not try Phase 2, at least for the majority of the time, until after the holidays. If nothing else, you won't gain anything more, and may even lose a few pounds. By way of more intro--DH was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Jan. 2004. He is getting excellent treatment, but that includes hormone treatment. The hormones should have added 20 pounds, but instead he has lost more than 40. The hormones could also have triggered diabetes (a family trait) and heart disease. Thanks to the South Beach way of life, his recent tests have all been great! At this time the cancer is in remission, and he is healthier than he has been in years. He is 57, I'm 56. A favorite around here: Spinach Dip 2 boxes frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 8 oz. non-fat sour cream 8 oz. non-fat mozarella, shredded Blend and microwave to hot. Great with broccoli, or those once in a while chips. Kris--FL
Guest guest
Hi everyone, My name is and I'm new to the group. My plan is to start reading the book this weekend, but I'm going to wait until after New Year's to start the program. I feel there are too many temptations at the moment to do this successfully. I hear the first two weeks are the hardest so I don't want to sabotage myself by trying to do them during the holiday. Does this make sense or am I making excuses? I am really looking forward to starting the program and would love any and all support and advice as I travel this road. Thanks, and I look forward to meeting all of you! Guest guest
My opinion is that you can still gain quite a bit between now and the new year that you will have to lose. I think you should start now. I think everyone looks for reasons to put it off. If you were to start now, you would be done with phase one well before Xmas and can have a week to add back in things and see how your body reacts. You may not even want any of the goodies on xmas. Your tastes will most likely change by then. I know there are temptations but what's more important, your health or the goodies. Just a thought. Guest guest
I agree with Carol. I specifically started on Monday so I would be done with Phase 1 by the couple holiday parties I am going to. I plan on bringing yummy SBD dishes to every place I go!! Now instead of packing on 10 more pounds by New Years, I plan on having at least 10 less!! I do understand the decision to wait though- I just knew it would only spell trouble for me! Margi < -- just started on Monday and down 3 already (I know I shouldn't weigh yet and it's prob just water weight-but still!) > My opinion is that you can still gain quite a bit between now and the new year that you will have to lose. Guest guest
Hello .... I think you're wise to wait til January. We'll all still be here then. I've been on SB since August, but have put it on a hiatus til Jan 1. Don't anybody fear I'm gonna go out of control. No, I'm just vowed to keep stable. Guest guest
Hi , I guess when you start is really up to you. However, I would read the book right now, regardless. It opens your eyes to foods that are good for you and ones that aren't. Take note of foods that are " allowed " and ones that are " ok " and ones that are " verboten " . Learn to recognize, even if you don't follow it for awhile, that the food you're putting into your body can be good for it or less good, depending. For instance, when you go to sit down for a meal at Christmas, let's say you have ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, a bun, and a glass of wine. Out of this, only the ham, green beans, and wine are SBD friendly. The others are not, especially the mashed potatoes. You can eat all of it, just start being aware of it. I guarantee it'll make you think twice about grabbing a second bun, even if you already ate one of them. And having active, discerning thoughts about your food is a GREAT way to get going and keep going on this diet. Too many times people don't pay attention to what they stick in their mouths, they just go with whatever is tasty and handy. SBD, if nothing else, has taught me to think about it much more than I ever used to. I agree that there are a lot of temptations around the holidays. But that doesn't mean you can't start to think about your food and perhaps watch it on the " big and bad " ones. Good luck! ----------------------------- Maybe we met yesterday... www.nathanpralle.com -----------------------------
