It seems like most of the mito list is helped by CoQ10 as the sole

suplement. CoQ10 energizes my mother and I a bit, but by itself it's not

enough. A metabolic formula is customized for us that contains CoQ10,

acetyl-L carnitine, alpha ketoglutaric acid, alpha lipoic acid, choline,

VC, VE, VA, and some other anti-oxidants. We are very symptomatic without

this suplement formula.

At Dr. Leichtner's recommendation we also take phosphatidyl choline

and piracetam. We have found these essential to maintaining something like

normal cognitive function (please see below). We also take a couple of

other meds that help modulate energy synthesis.

Please note that these are only the things that help us. My understanding

is that supplements can be highly individualized -- what helps one person

may be unnecessary, or even harmful, to another.

One caveat: I'm 23 years old, and my mother is 46; I have been ill all

my life, while she has been affected only since her mid 30s. Optimizing

cognitive function is very important to us because it is so essential to

maintaining a functional adult life. I started on supplements for this

mid-way through high school, and I doubt I could've successfully completed

high school and college without them. We continue to persue the

improvement of these symptoms through whatever safe and reasonable avenues

we can find. These are our personal choices, choices that I started making

when I was about 15. However, I would imagine that if you are the parent

of a small child this is a matter that would require a great deal of

careful investigation and consideration, along with seeking input from

your physician, to help you make the best choice for you and your child.

Sincerely,

Adam Messinger
