Guest guest
Hi everyone. I am pretty new to the boards and first I would like to thank everyone for their posts. Your information helps so much. got his starband for his plagio on 01/19. We have been trying to keep him cool bec he seems to overheat in his helmet quickly and gets these real bad rashes. I keep going back to the helmet place and they keep trying to adjust and tell me to " air out " his head by taking the helmet off for an extra 10 minutes, twice a day to wipe out the helmt & Matt's head. Well, his rash spots are still so bad. They almost look like rug burns. I feel so bad. Did anyone else have a problem with rashes like this and frequent visits back to the MD? Thanks for any help in advance. Krista
Guest guest
Rug burns? That doesn't sound good. Can you post a picture so we can see how bad it is? Guest guest
Krista, I am sorry to hear this. We only experienced some heat rash on Colin's forehead. A little hydrocortisone and Aveen oatmeal bath helped it. I think there body temp adjusts better the more they wear it, not less. But I can see just taking it off and wiping the sweat away would be necessary. I would think by now his body would've adjusted. Is it *possible* that these red spots are caused by an improperly fitted helmet and not heat? I know you mentioned you have taken him back several times. Have you posted pics of Matt? Maybe we could tell you more info. I hope that you get some answers soon. He shouldn't wear it until this is resolved if it is irritating his skin that much. Please keep us posted. Guest guest
I am going to take some pics when I get home from work tonite & try to post them (never posted pics here before). I almost had a heart attack when I saw his poor little head at his care center when I visited. It could be extreme heat rash. It was a VERY red color, the skin was shiny, looked a little cut like a rug burn that occurres when you skid. The redness did not even fad after 30 minutes..... > > > > Hi everyone. > > > > I am pretty new to the boards and first I would like to thank > > everyone for their posts. Guest guest
Have you tried the hydrocortisone cream? Are you leaving the band off to let it heal? If you have trouble posting the pics, you are welcome to email them to me and I can do it for you. Are you making sure the helmet is completely dry after cleaning it w/the alcohol? , mom to Hannah, DOCgrad Cape Cod, Ma http:hannahsnoggin.typepad.com > > > > > > Hi everyone. > > > > > > I am pretty new to the boards and first I would like to thank > > > everyone for their posts. Guest guest
Hi Krista Yes, I did have a LOT of problems with heat rash compared with most of the people here, it was a constant issue for us to keep Lucia cool as she never seemed to adjust in the way that most of the babies did and would always get a rash if she got the tiniest bit overheated. I put it down to her sensitive skin, she just breaks out into a sweat even if she wears a cotton/nylon mix (which is always what her granny in Bulgaria sends her!) She's just a sweaty betty and that is a harder child to cope with when in a band than one who can just drip with sweat and not worry at all... Obviously rule out fit issues, but I really know how bad heat rash can be, so here are my tips that worked for me: 1. Turn down the heating or turn up the air con so you are cool/cold 2. Dress your little one soooo lightly you feel like a neglectful mother. You can't always control the temperature say at daycare, but you can make them aware that if is is hot or he seems sweaty, then they can remove clothing. Lucia never wore a vest or socks or any tight clothes or anything nylon or synthetic whilst in the band. Just cool cotton clothes and bung on a coat when you go outside 3. Anticipate heat all the time- if you see your little one even put his hand to his head once or bother it in the slightest, whip that helmet off and dry the hair and don't put it back until the rash is died down or almost completely gone. Ths will stop a little rash getting into a big rash. At the first sign of trouble, take it off immediately. 4. Be aware of temperature differences, say in shopping malls, or in daycare or in the car and adjust clothing or just take the helmet off. Better to have the helmet off for an hour on a hot car ride or even a couple of hours in daycare than risk a terrible rash which can put them out of the helmet for days 5. Take the helmet off every couple of hours for 10 and have an air. Some days I split the hour off into chunks of 10 min 6. Go really really easy on the alcohol, just clean once a day at the start of the hour off with a damp (not wet) cloth and scrub away. Alcohol irritates as well and if you are not careful this can compound the problem. 7. Personally i didn't use hydrocortisone for this problem, because as I understand it it can only be used for two weeks max at a time (due to skin thinning), also you have to be really careful with it round the eyes at it is linked to cataracts in later life. I have used it for Lucia, I just don't think it is a long-term solution in your case- better to prevent the rashes which sound ongoing and not so much a one off. 8. If there is a rash, let it go away first before putting the helmet back on. If you jump back in and put the helmet on too soon, you invariably get another rash and you are going in circles. This probably sounds like a nightmare, but it's not that bad - you are probably doing most of this stuff anyway. I have to say that when i started with lucia, I quickly realised she was more sensitive than other kids in the band (no-one else's child seemed to have these ongoing rashes at the first sign of heat, most seemed to adjust within two weeks) and basically me and my husband committed to keeping her cool 24/7 for the four months, we almost treated it like our mission in life! There just wasn't another way for us and I truly believe Lucia would not have been able to wear the band had we not done so. I don't want to scare any new parents starting out- most people don't have these problems!!!! Hope this helps. Please do check out fit issues too, I'm not asuming it is heat rash, but if you find that by keeping your little one very very cool on weekends and following this advice you have no more rashes, then you have got your answer!
