Guest guest
Just a " quickie " Umbilical cord blood was starting to be used for bone marrow transplants during the 90's. The reason people started looking at " cord " blood is that a baby's marrow is in over-production as baby's don't get enough oxygen during the pregnancy. Hence, in a small quantity of blood in the cord, we can " harvest " as many " seeds " as it were, as compared to when I've assisted harvesting 2.5 liters of blood from an adult for bone marrow transplant issues. Technology exists (like in sperm and embryo banks) to store things for years. This is now being offered as " insurance " (one of my families asked me about it and the fee was in the range of $3000 to harvest, and then an annual fee to be paid each year until the cells were thawed or until the person died). From MY OWN VIEW, don't know whether this is worth it as it's only use today is for bone marrow transplants. However, as Genetic Engineering improves (of which I am totally against for moral and ethical reasons), I'm sure that more can be done with the dna itself which " codes " for everything in our bodies. Guest guest
when someone is born with a problem with their white cells, is this still an option? as i have said before, if our next child is born with the disease orion had, the drs want to try a bone marrow transplant. i know that it can be difficult to find a marrow donor. i guess what i'm wondering is, do you think would this be an option for us? or would the cells from the cord also be " sick " ? julia orion's mommy 9-18-98 to 2-3-99 familial erythrophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and mito Orion's Page In a message dated 4/16/00 7:55:38 AM Pacific Daylight Time, mitodad@... writes: << Umbilical cord blood was starting to be used for bone marrow transplants during the 90's.
