A New Approach

Those of you who have been around this list a while know that I have been a strong supporter of the concept of Presumed Consent, to the point of becoming a member of the Board of the Presumed Consent Foundation and their Director of Special Projects. While I still support the concept, I have come to understand that the political climate is not favorable to it and it may never be implemented.

Preferring to apply my energies to something with a greater chance for near-term success, I have incorporated a new non-profit corporation to engage in a proactive campaign of public education on organ donation and transplantation issues. I have long felt that a major failing of the OPO's with regard to public education is that they are not proactive about securing opportunities for education. They react to requests for programs and speakers, but do very little in the way of beating the bushes for new and different opportunities. My new organization, 2nd Life, Inc., will take a different approach. We will approach public awareness of the organ donation shortage as a marketing problem, and work to solve it as any other marketing problem would be - proactively looking for new opportunities to reach as many people as possible with this critically important message. We are in the midst of applying for tax exemption under section 501©3, which will make donati

ons tax deductible, but we are not waiting for that before taking action. I am pleased to tell you that we have applied for and won a small grant from the Iowa Dept of Public Health. These funds will be used to construct a self-contained computer kiosk with touchpanel LCD screen that will display information about organ donation and transplantation. The kiosk will be placed in a high traffic area, like a shopping mall or a rest area along Interstate 80. In the near future we will begin producing items for sale that will generate operating funds for the corporation. A website will also go online shortly.

I'll keep you all informed as we progress.Steve Rahn
