conversion of mmol/L to mg/dl + (180mg/dl = maximum nondiabetic postprandial?)

A friend in the UK sent me a link to a site that shows us how to convert

mg/dl (US) to mmol/l (UK) readings, so we can discuss blood sugar reading

levels.

I went to the site

(http://www.faqs.org/faqs/diabetes/faq/part1/section-9.html) and 180mg/dl is

listed as the maximum nondiabetic postprandial reading. Above that, and you

are considered diabetic. uhhhh, why is it set so high?

I ran into this several months ago also at other sites, when the nurses in

our area told me I was diabetic. Online information told me anything below

180 was fine (translation: nondiabetic), but the nurses argued and said that

was incorrect information. It took them a month to convince me.

Now, my friend (just diagnosed as a diabetic this week) is finding the same

guidelines and I don't know what to tell him. Makes me wonder, too. But,

after being on this list for a couple of months, I am not comfortable with

the idea of 180 readings being classed as okay.

Will someone please explain this discrepancy for me? Would sure appreciate

it.
