This heat rash is incredibly common in the first week or two, my

daughter had it and it is very easy to solve. You need to keep her

really really cool! The helmet is insulating, and so is like us

wearing a woolly hat (or two) indoors. So you need to turn down the

central heating a notch or two (so you are cool), take off a couple

of layers (no socks, no vest, cooler cotton clothes- basically you

look like a bad mum when you dress them!) and take the helmet off

every couple of hours for an airing and wipe her little head down.

Prevention is better than cure as once it has developed, you do

usually have to allow a few hours out of the helmet.

I personally never used anything except pure alcohol once a day at

the start of the hour off to clean the helmet, drying it really

well. But go with the advice of the orthotist as different brands

can do different things. However, don't be tempted to over clean.

Any product you use will stay in the band and be in contact 23 hours

a day, which can cause irritation. So just stick with the bare

minimum they suggest. Also, prevention is better than cure, so try

not to let her get overheated in the first place. If you see her put

a hand to the helmet to itch once, whip it off and let her cool down

for 10 min. Better that than hours or days out of the band.

The good news is it usually resolves itself within a couple of weeks

as they adjust to the new temperature. I got an email from someone

who had exactly the same problem last week yesterday, and they are

fine now and her little boy has adjusted great.

Good luck. By all means call the orthotist too. There is also a file

called the first week with a helmet here full of this type of advice

as these problems are incredibly common, but very easy to solve.
