Hello All..

I had a nasty reaction to something I ate this weekend, and have been

trying to track the culprit down! :P The only " unusual " thing I ate

this weekend were some of the new " dark chocolate peanut m & m's " ! As

far as I can tell from the label on the package, they should be fine,

but I am sure that they are the problem. I have tried and tried to

get through online to ask about the GF status of them, but their site

is down. Has anyone else contacted them about these?

Thanks....

C,

We have never reacted to regular or peanut M & M's but last Jan. 2004 when

they produced those funny black and white ones we had reactions to those, we

have also learned to avoid the Valentine's pink and white ones. None of

those packages had anything on the ingredient list that we would be

suspicious either. We just stick to the standard one's and stay away from

any holiday or promotional ones. I can't imagine why those would cause us

special problems but they do.

Thanks..

I will definitely be avoiding anything other than the usual ones!!

Peanut or plain m & m's never bother me, so I wasn't all that worried

about these ones, because there seems to be nothing on the label that

would cause a problem! :P

Ugh.

I finally got through on Mars's website and I will post any response

that they send to me on this topic.

Thanks...

My almost 3 year old celiac daughter gets a terrible reaction to

m & m's. I was using them for potty training and she was having

horrible diareaha. Someone mentioned that the dye could be a problem.

My almost-two-year-old (who is also " pobby " trained almost!) eats

regular m & m's with no difficulty (that's what we used as incentive,

too). He didn't get any of the ones that I seem to have reacted to,

because he isn't allowed to have any nuts yet. It would have been

interesting to see if he reacted too, because he is very sensitive to

gluten (I consider him my " little litmus test " ! :)). I don't think

that it would be the dye...I am thinking that it is more of a cross-

contamination issue probably.

After I had been GF for a few months, I had difficulty with anything

chocolate. Gave me diahrea and headaches, made me feel awful. My kids did

not experience this but I have a close friend who is Celiac and she also had

to cut out chocolate. She finally convinced me to do it and I did feel

better. I slowly added it back in about 6 months later. I don't know the

reason why it affected me that way but it doesn't anymore. I ate enough

chocolate on Easter Sunday to make Willy Wonka look like an amateur! :-)

What would they be cross-contaminated with or from? I understand the

'crispy' M & M's are made on a separate line because of the different

size of the center. We (1 adult celiac and 1 kid) eat all varieties of

M & M's except the cripsy center without any reactions, including the

holiday specials and Shrek special issue.

Have you looked into the possibility that you may have other food

allergies? When my little one kept reacting to gluten-free foods we

kept looking into his diet and allergies until we food several other

grains he reacts to - we eliminated those and no more gluten-like

reactions.

My daughter 15 with diabetes and cealic disease cannot tolerant M & M'S

at all. Makes her really sick so she simply passes them by.
