Guest guest
How often is too often for the shoes to be slipping? Maxwell's toes are out of place at least once every hour that he is awake. I've been holding him in a chair all night long to help him (and me) sleep a little, so he doesn't get the chance to wriggle! I can't possibly tie the shoes any tighter. I already feel like I am tying them too tightly. I think Dr. Herzenberg's next step is the KAFO. I am taking Max in on Monday to see what can be done. Unfortunately Dr. H. has been in Florida the past few days (for a good reason!). Tonya mentioned a different style of shoe and a different size. What style did you change to and did you go up a size or down a size? We are using the Gap socks with no-skid bottoms and his shoes have a small built in pad around the back of the ankle. I think the big problem is that Max doesn't have any ankles to speak of. Just pudge. Any input from anyone would be appreciated. To 's parents - I am one of the parents that you have seen a few times. You were there for 's first visit the day that Max had his tenotomy. We will be in on Monday at 9:45am. Hope to see you there! Glad things are progressing so nicely! Thanks to everyone for your encouragement! Becky & Maxwell
Guest guest
Max is 5 months old. His shoes are size 0. When his foot is in properly, his toes come very close to the end of the shoe. Like I said, his feet are pudgy, so the width is as small as it can go. When I put the shoe on, I buckle the strap first, getting it to the 5th hole, which is very tight. Dr. H. had put it on the 4th hole, but the strap seems to have loosened up. I am pulling the laces as tight as I possibly can. I hope this helps. Thank you for taking the time to help me! Guest guest
Becky, I'm sorry I haven't responded before now, but I have been thinking about you and Max. It does concern me that he seems to be able to slip his feet out so much. Are you buckling the strap first then tying or vice versa? I know most people swear that by buckling first, the strap helps keep the feet down in the shoes (I'm in the minority who ties the laces first then buckles over the laces). With the strap, how tight are you getting it? What size shoes are on the bar (look near the pad that goes above the heel) and how do they seem to fit? Sorry for all the questions, but they might help us to help you keep Max in his shoes. Grayek wrote: > How often is too often for the shoes to be slipping? Guest guest
Becky, I'm sorry you are having such a hard time with the shoes. By way of encouragement, one thing I can say is that it WILL get better. At first you feel so awkward putting them on, and then at some point it becomes second nature, like tying your own. It also helps as the foot grows longer and slims down. (How old is Maxwell again?) Here's what I do: Unlace the shoes almost completely, and put the foot in heel first, and then, holding the foot down with one hand, drape the tongue over the foot, then pull the strap tight. If you need to, punch another hole in it to get it tight. Then let go and do the laces. My daughter's toes kept slipping too at the beginning too, and I took her shoes off many times a day to retighten them. Soon I wondered if her foot was regressing or perhaps wasn't completely corrected. She ended up back in a cast for a few weeks, and once that was done, we had a much easier time with the shoes. So, as I'm sure you will, stay in close communication with Dr. H and talk to him about your concerns. Don't be too discouraged.. you'll get through it, though I know it's hard when you're in the middle of it. Even though had to go back in a cast, which at the time seemed disastrous, everything worked out fine. (It actually was a bit of a relief to have her foot ensconced in a cast again after the trouble we had keeping it in the shoe.) Take care and ask more questions or just complain if you need to.. and (6/29/00) > How often is too often for the shoes to be slipping? Guest guest
Becky, That strap will tend to loosen up over time as the leather stretches, so you'll be using different holes. You might want to ask Dr. Herzenberg if Max's foot is completely corrected as mentioned. Maybe that's why you're having problems?! Do both feet slip or just one? Have you tried two pairs of socks-probably not a good idea with the summer heat I guess...? Sorry I can't be of much help! I hope your frustration lessens soon! Feel free to vent here- that's what we're here for! & 3-16-00 > > > > > How often is too often for the shoes to be slipping? Guest guest
Becky, Lori Stime had written a wonderful post quite some time ago about how she put the shoes on her daughter Annika. It is at post # 818 if you'd like to go back in the archives and read it. I know one parent from this list has also laced the shoes " backwards " (where the bow would be near the toes instead of at the top of the shoe) and that has seemed to help her son not be able to escape as easily. Personally, I could not put the DBB on Jakob alone for about the first month. I wouldn't take the shoes off unless my husband was home to help me put it back on. I would put Jakob's foot in the shoe and my husband would hold his foot down by applying light to moderate pressure on his bent knee with one hand and holding the bottom of the shoe with the other hand to keep him from pulling his foot back out. I hope there is something that is suggested that will help you. Grayek wrote: > Max is 5 months old. His shoes are size 0. Guest guest
Becky, Dr. Shurr in Iowa orgionally set 's shoes on the 4th hole also, but right when we got home we set them on the 5 th hole too because they seemed to have loosened up already. She has been in the same pair of shoes now for 10 months and we STILL have them on the 5th hole. We did'nt start out with such a small size in shoes though, she was already 7 months old, so I can understand how hard it must be to keep such tiny feet in shoes at all. Even my first daughter (who did not have clubfoot) never wore shoes at such a young age because she had no heals yet and the cute little shoes that I had bought always slipped off. It sounds like the alternative KAFO might work for him though if he continually is slipping out of the shoes (or his heals just won't stay down.) I had'nt heard of the KAFO's until now, perhaps they could keep his foot in and down until his feet have grown a little more and his heals develope more. I have'nt been keeping up with all the posts so excuse me if I repeat any questions but, are you buckling the strap before you tie the laces? I know some people do buckling first then the laces and some do laces first and then the buckling. We have always just done up the buckle tightly and then tied the shoe laces, double knot. Dr. Ponseti had recommended once if her feet were slipping to try tying first and then buckling, he said some parents had success with that way when the foot was slipping. Another parent had said that they laced the shoes from top to bottom, meaning after you have the shoes done up the bow of the laces would be down by his toes. I think this helps keep the laces tighter than at the top because you don't loose the " grip " when you are tying them. I think it worked real well for that parent. Sorry, I could'nt be more help, I hope things start looking up real soon! Hang in there, Holly and (bilateral clubfeet, Feb.11,2000, Michigan) Re: shoes slipping/ >Max is 5 months old. Guest guest
Becky I've read that you have been given lots of idea's on your question, but I thought I would throw in our two cents too :0) also had major slipping problems. I tried multiple pairs of socks (including the ones with the nonskid bottoms), different shoe laces and different brands of socks with different thickness'. I became a little obsessed with socks and the his feet slipping. Nothing seemed to keep his feet from moving in the shoe. Mind you his foot never actually came out of the shoe it just would slip enough to allow his heal elevate in the shoe. We finally put him in a smaller Markell shoe. The shoe is almost too small for him. He fits it just exactly. In this new size of shoe his foot doesn't slip at all! only has to wear one pair of socks and they don't have to be super thick. His feet have shown a remarkable difference progress since his heals have been staying put in the shoes. We wish you luck. I know my husband thought I needed a rubber room I was so crazy about the heal slipping thing. I just wanted to do the right thing and I see you do. Hope you guys find something that works for you! Best of luck Tonya and Bilateral Clubfeet Dr. Colburn patient
