I wish I knew!!

I can tell my story, if that helps. I was sexually active with my

fiancée/husband to be and I started having pain with urination. I went to a

ob-gyn who put me on two different courses of antibiotics. The symptoms

were still there so he referred me to a urologist. I went and even though I

" looked normal " he decided to do a bladder biopsy. I had the procedure done

and was diagnosed with I.C. because they could not even get half of the

normal level of fluid into it. The doctor suggested I have a bladder

distention with DMSO as part of the treatment. I was naive and had this

procedure done. That weekend I was staying with my husband to be and I had

to go to the bathroom. I SCREAMED it hurt so bad. I called the doctor and

spoke to the intern on call. He said the procedure didn't work. WHAT!! I

don't even recall that being an option!! The pain never went away and it's

been 11 years. Sue I have VV,IC,hyperthyroidism and migraines.

HI Sue,

Just curious but you mentioned you had the pain with urination and all they did to you but was it then that the vulvar or vaginal pain started or was that ongoing at the same time?

By the way I do hope more people respond to that question:

What do you feel initially started or was the cause of your pain?

I'll try to keep a running list and see if I can break it down if we get enough replies.

Thanks

Dee~

Hi Dee

I believe that what started my VVS was an overindulgence in a big crate of

strawberries last summer. For 3 nights after eating them, I was up all

night itching all over (arms, legs, etc.). Within 2 days I 'thought' I had

a yeast infection. You know the rest of the story!

I also have lower back trouble (herniated discs). Maybe the combination is

what caused this, since obviously most people with food allergies or back

problems alone don't wind up with VVS.

Thank you for your commitment to all this.

Looking back, ever since being a teenager, I had pain with tampon insertion and discomfort from being in a chlorinated swimming pool. However, full-blown vulvodynia and interstitial cystitis did not occur until I was 37 after taking antibiotics. And then repeated courses of antibiotics which were prescribed when my symptoms did not abate. I truly believe that antibiotics played a major role for me.

After reading everyone's response to the " How it started " I find it

so interesting that the one thing we all seem to have in common is

anitbiotic use then uncontrolable yeast issues.

That's how mine started too. I was on Septra then Augmentin for a

very stubborn sinus infection. I started feeling like I had a yeast

infection. The doctor treated me for a yeast infection that just

made the itching come back ten times as bad. Ever since then (6

months) I have not been the same. I use Estrace every night. In

addition, I was diagnosed with lichen sclerosis, a disease of the

vulvar skin that makes it appear white in color I use Clobetosol

(steroid cream) nightly for that. It can also spread to the rectum.

Anyone with those symptoms?

My VVS began back in 1997. I was dating a guy at the time and after

our first time having sex (my first time with him not the first time

losing my virginity), I developed a UTI. This was not uncommon for

me because I did have a history of getting UTI's from intercourse

before but had not had one in a while. Anyway, my doctor prescribed

oral antibiotics to tx my UTI and I thought that would be the end of

it....but for some very strange reason & for the first time in my

life, my UTI did not respond to oral antibiotics? I spoke with my

doctor over the phone & he had me increase the dose of the

medication I was taking. When that didn't work, he switched me over

to a stronger broad spectrum antibiotic which didn't work either??

To make a long story short, I ended up having to go to the emergency

room one night because I started to develop a fever & my doctor

thought my UTI might be spreading to my kidneys. When I was in the

ER, the doctors decided to admit me because they said my UTI was

complicated because it had not responded to several broad spectrum

antibiotics and started me on IV meds.

I was in the hospital for 5 days. Well, my UTI cleared up but I

started to develop this horrible vaginal burning on the 3rd day. I

had never experienced vaginal burning before in my life so was quite

freaked out by it and didn't know what it was from. My doctor said

I most likely had develped a yeast infection from all the IV

antibiotics so he prescribed one of the intravaginal anti-yeast

creams. Of course none of them worked and that was the beginning of

my nightmare living with VVS!

Two important things to note about my story....The first oral

antibiotic I was prescribed by my doctor was Floxin. I've read

about other women whom had taken Floxin right before their

vulvodynia/VVS began (maybe some type of allergic reaction to this

particular med???) The other thing about my story is that the man I

had sex with was a new partner & was quite " well endowed. " I recall

that the sex was not that enjoyable due to this fact & also because

I was not adequetly lubricated so the sex was actually a bit painful.

Anyway, that's my story regarding " How It Started. " I do think its

interesting that many women's vulvodynia/VVS began after a being

treated with antibiotics!! I wonder if VVS is a result of an

allergic reaction to these medications??

Curious to know if others who said that their conditon began after

antibiotic use recall if the medication they were taking was Floxin?
