Guest guest
Hi Aubrey - Mike is doing great - all liver functions are normal with the exception of his alt which is one point higher than it should be......his magnesium borders on normal to just below normal....but one thing that has been a bit low is his platelets - they were normal, but now are about 15 points below the normal low....what would be the reason for that???? they did tell us that the spleen would probably never return to it's normal size and would always remain somewhat enlarged....... He is doing wonderful - is getting back at playing music and has energy I've never seen him have before...he was six weeks post transplant yesterday...... Guest guest
I wouldn't worry about any of those slight abnormalities you mentioned. The low platelets are due to his still enlarged spleen. Low or lower magnesium levels seem to be related to the immunosuppressant meds. A multivitamin with minerals daily would be a good thing to take. Magnesium is also found in almonds and some other nuts. Walnuts are good because the Omega-3 acids found in them. So is flax seed meal, for the same reason. Good preventative measures for heart disease and making sure of good blood flow to that new liver. Sounds like Mike is doing great. Hopefully he's walking or biking for exercise. Soon he should be considering starting working out with weights to prevent bone density loss and to rebuild the muscle he lost during the last months before his tx. All the best. Guest guest
Hi Aubrey - thanks for those answers - it puts our minds at ease.... and yes!! he is doing great - it makes me wonder how we existed before this transplant - the abnormality of our lives - and we didn't even realize it at the time.... he did join the gym three weeks post op, he works his upper body with light weights and his lower body - no abs for awhile....he bikes also and walks daily - the transplant centre called today and lowered his prednisone to 10 mgs. from 15, so that is great news. take care & thanks again!
