Day 2 in Hanger Helmet

Hi all,

I am new to the board. I wish I had found it earlier. My daughter

has been in her hanger helmet for 2 days now, tonight we are

attempting a full night of sleep in it. I am just a bit upset

because of the way she is sweating in it. I just checked on her and

the collar of her pajamas are wet from sweat. I just feel horrible.

Will she always sweat like this? Will this get any easier? I am

also uncomfortable with putting the helmet on her. I don't know if I

am doing it right. Geez, there are so many aspects of helmet wearing

that I didnt think of when I got it. Does anyone have any words of

wisdom on if the sweat will diminish or if there is anything else

that I will need to worry about. I wonder if the helmet will stop

her from crawling. She is 6 months old and just started sitting up,

crawling is the next step. One more question. Does the helmet

really have to be on 23 hours a day or can we be lienent with that

number? Her case is very mild and the doctor told us that it was our

option to get it or not. So I am wondering if I could keep her in it

for less than 23 hours. Sorry to bombard with questions and I

especially apologize for my whining. But I cant help it.

Hi ,

I'm glad you found us, and welcome to the group!

We have other group members who have used or are using the Hanger

Cranial Band, so hopefully they will see the subject line and

respond to your post.

I'm sure you'll get helpful responses from parents of banded

babies. We used aggressive repositioning only to treat our

daughter's plagio/brachy, so I don't have personal experience with a

band, but I wanted to post to say I have never read that a band

delayed a baby from crawling, etc. There is also a document here at

our group site in the Files Section called " Helping Baby Adjust to

1st helmet " that can give you some tips on some concerns you might

have, including sweating. I have read other parents post about how

some babies sweat a lot at first with the band, but after a few days

or a week when the baby's body acclimates to the band, it diminishes

greatly.

Also, it is really important to stay with the 23 hour a day

regimen. You never know when your baby will have a growth spurt,

and you will want to take advantage of every opportunity to help

redirect her growth into a corrected headshape. The Hanger band

brochure instructs that the baby wear the band 22-23 hours a day.

Please keep us posted on how your daughter is doing in her band, and

I hope she sleeps well tonight!

Take care, and feel free to post any additional questions and

concerns. The parents here are very helpful, informed, and

supportive, and most have banded babies.

Hello

Welcome to our group. I'm glad you found us. Arianna is such a

beautiful unique name.

The sweating actually will get much better. For the first week what

you can do is to take the helmet off and dry it out with a towel,

and then dry Arianna's head as well. Put it right back on. She will

adjust to the temperature changes. maybe you can keep your house a

degree or two cooler to make the transition easier. Don't worry,

she will adjust.

As for the 23hr wear, I advise you to keep that as tight as

possible. You can't predict when growthspurts occur so you really

want her in the band as much as possible. At her age she really

shouldn't have to be in the band long. My daughter was banded at

the same time, and finished in 11wks. This might sound long now,

but it will be over before you know it, and then Arianna is left

with a round noggin that you will be greatful for. Have fun with

the band. Decorate it. I used to put mod podge on ours, then

stickers, and then a few more coats of mod podge. When you want to

change it all the stuff comes right off.

Please don't feel bad for venting, or voicing conserns. That is

what we are here for. Oh, and before I forget, the band will not

cause her any developmental delays.

Hi

I just wanted to welcome you and second the advice you have

received. Keep her really cool (turn the central heating down a bit)

and dress her lightly (no socks, no vest) and take the helmet off

every now and again to air. That usually helps an enormous amount

with sweating, which does get better anyway.

As for 23 hours wear, do go with that advice. It's like medicine, if

you only take half the dose, you only get half the effect. Also,

your little one will have a harder time adjusting to the sleeping

and sweating if it is on and off all the time- just make it the norm

and within the week you'll be fine.

Good luck

I would like to thank everyone for their support. I am disappointed to report a roadblock. My daughter was in the helmet all night for 10 hours. She slept through the night nicely, she did fall asleep later and woke up earlier than usually. But just by 1 hour total. Then I took it off this morning for an hour and then back on for 4 hours after that. Then I took it off because I noticed sweat dripping down her face and the helmet kept falling to her eyebrows. I cleaned her head and the helmet and then I noticed that she has developed a rash around the perimeter of the helmet. It is red and pimply. The bottom back of her head right above her neck is also red and rashy looking. So I haven't put it on since. So she has been out of it for almost 6 hours and she is still red and rashy. So I am deciding if I should put it on tonight for bed or if I should just leave it off and call the technician tomorrow. What do you guys think. A friend of mine suggested that I put a thin layer of cloth over her head and then put on the helmet. Will that affect results? I don't want to reapply a helmet if her rash is still red. I will also ask about the gold bound powder. I am so confused and upset that I am about to go to another neurologist for a second opinion. Again thanks for all the help. The helmet issue was hard enough for me to deal with but now the rashes and sweating are making it even worse. Help!!!!

Hi ,

Welcome to the group! Don't worry this will get easier. The first few

days they are a bit sweaty, try to dress her a bit lightly and her

body temp will adjust to normal. You will get more comfortable with

putting the helmet on and off soon too.

As far as developmental delays, most of us can tell you not to worry

about that! My son got his helmet late (10.5 months) but has never

had a problem with crawling, pulling up, cruising, and learning to

walk. The helmet has actually saved him from many a head bump.

Yes 23 hours a day is a must! Just think of it as the more you keep

it on her, the shorter the treatment time! You don't want to miss

even an hour of growth spurt! Don't worry you will be used to all

this very soon. Please post if you have more questions, we

understand what you are going through :)

Hi ,

Welcome to the group. I'll jump right into your questions. My son

has a Hanger Band also. He had a CranioCap last Spring, and outgrew

it, so now we are onto his 2nd helmet since 11/04, and we've had

awesome results w/ the Hanger Band. Yes, 23 hours must be adhered

to. To give you some hope, you can view Jaden's progress pics and

see the difference yourself. Look in Photos/Before &

After/Hanger/Jaden.

As for crawling, no it won't delay her one bit.

And the sweating. I hope you were able to read the helpful file we

have on Baby's First Helmet that one of the members told you about

in their post to you. One thing that I do is I put Gold Bond

Itching Powder inside the helmet. I sprinkle some inside, and

spread it around w/ my fingers so that by the time I am done, there

is a nice light layer inside. Or you can do the " cake pan " method,

kinda like when you bake a cake and you flour the pan first. Either

way, make sure the layer is thin. Then I gently slide it on over

Jaden's head, making sure no powder gets in his eyes. Once it's on,

no more powder will have the chance to come out and get in his

eyes. The Gold Bond helps w/ the itching, and the sweating, not to

mention the smell a lot of parents report on getting in the

helmets. When I take Jaden's helmet off for bathtime, I simply use

an unscented wet wipe and wipe out the helmet and Jaden's head

(there is sometimes powder marks left on his head). I put it in

front of a fan to dry while we are in the tub. Our orthotist

approved the Gold Bond and the wet wipes for the Hanger Band, so I

honestly don't see a problem w/ you using this method w/ your band.

But check w/ your orthotist first. The Gold Bond and the wet wipes

do not harm the band in any way.

Are you able to post pics of your daughter w/ the helmet on for us

to look at? Then we can tell you if it's on correctly. The helmet

should rest just above the eyebrows. Again, you can see Jaden's pic

w/ his Hanger band on in the file I mentioned to you above. This

will give you an idea of where it should be sitting on your daughter.

Also, you can dress your daughter a titch more lightly while she is

acclimating to the helmet. I always leave Jaden's socks off here in

the house. The hands and the feet release heat when the head is

covered.

Even tho her case is mild, you'll see the fastest correction

possible if you leave the helmet on 23 hours a day. We saw a HUGE

improvement in just 3 days and again, the pics are in the Jaden

folder I mentioned. Hope this helps. Please post w/ any more

questions. What state are you in btw?

If it happened with my son, I'd probably leave it off until I spoke with the orthotist. Waiting 12-18 hours can't make much of a difference.

It gets better. Her body will adjust to the "hat" keeping in a lot more heat. In the meantime, dress her in one less layer. In summer timet he babies go down to just diapers for a couple of days.

It shouldn't interfere in any milestones. In fact it makes them even more fearless because when they fall and hit their heads it doesn't hurt. Of course when they graduated they have a new lesson to learn (which doesn't take long - trust me).

The 23 hours a day is a MUST! You never know when a growth spurt will hit. It may also mean that she graduates sooner rather than later.
