It's ringing a bell because you asked about it last month. *G*

Do a search in the archives for " K-righter. " There are several posts. I didn't

read them all, but I got the impression that nobody could find it, though

Margaret thought she'd heard it as a new drug. Let us know if you figure it

out!

K-rider?

Hi y'all:

This is ringing a BIG bell, but I can't zero in on it in this OLD brain.

Treatment included continuous blood glucose monitoring, as well as

electrolyte balancing. The patient received two s/l [k-riders or

k-righters] and p.o. potassium chloride 20 mEq for her hypokalemia, and was

later stabilized.

Jayni,

Here's a list of medicines beginning with K at Medline Plus. One of them is

K-Lyte, another is K-Lor and a good many are potassium related.

Hey Robyn:

I appreciate your taking time to research this - I'm sorry I've been swamped

and didn't see either of your messages until just now. This is a very clear

dictator, so I don't think I can make your hypothesized sentence work.

Although I'd like to go with " K-Lyte, " I'm clear hearing two Rs, one in the

middle after the K, and one at the end. I've already sent it with a blank,

but if I ever find out anything, I'll be sure to post it.

Thanks again for taking so much of your time on my behalf.

I definitely know what you mean about the K-Rider issue here. I have had

this many times before and have NEVER been able to find it, definitely

sounds like K-Rider. I am wondering if it is like potassium given over time

(rider part). I really have no clue and have never been able to document

it.

I found this reference at

http://www.baxter.com/doctors/iv_therapies/education/iv_therapy_CE/potassium/kcl\

error.html:

" An order written for an IVR (intravenous rider) of potassium chloride was

mistakenly read as IVP (intravenous push) ... "

(Okay - not a real good example of competency, but ... ) So, apparently a rider

is simply an IV substance " riding " along with another. The above would probably

be considered a

K rider. Hope this helps.

I think we're onto something here. Now, I'm going to put this in a SAFE

place and hope my poor old brain remembers next time (1) that we ever had

this discussion, and (2) what came out of it!

You kids are just gonna HATE being old - trust me!

I tried searches on Google using " k-rider potassium " (without the quotation

marks) and " k-riders " (plural) and " potassium " (again, without the quotation

marks) and found one hit without the hyphen plural, K riders, and two hits

with the hyphen, one singular and one plural, K-rider and K-riders. I would

go with the hyphenated. Didn't find anything with righter or righters

except as a name K. Righter.

Nice detective work!! ; )

I just love how this whole group/board works together! Now I really

remember why we keep referring to " cubicle buddies. " Glad to be a part of

this group/brainteasers (feed me). LOL! Wish I had more time to keep up

with " everything " going on, but y'all know how that is...

BTW, at the same site listed below, here's their definition of 'rider':

" For the more severe cases, the use of small-volume drug delivery systems

(also known as riders, piggybacks or intravenous piggybacks) is common, to

infuse larger amounts of potassium chloride in smaller fluid volumes over a

shorter time. "

Clicking on 'rider' gives the following:

" Rider: Intravenous piggyback bag (also called mini-bag, IVPB). "

So we now have 3 other things it could be called besides 'rider'.
