Guest guest
Sandy, First of all welcome home! Glad to hear you so " perky " . That's unbelievable what you had to go through in the hospital, it's very unfortunate to have anyone go through mistakes in hospitals, but they unfortunately, do occur. This is why I think this list is so important, not for just the talking, the support, but also the importance of stressing various things that could happen to anyone undergoing ANY types of surgery. I thank you for sharing your experience, and SO GLAD you're here telling us! Hang in there, and keep up the walking (and kissing too!) LOL!! Blondie I'm Home!!! Hi all, Finally got home yesterday, Saturday, and am doing great. Just went out for my second walk today with dh. Just short ones down the street, but up and about. Thank heavens for pain meds!! I am having a bit of pain , but managable with meds from Dr. Randall. AEverything went well except for a problem in the ICU the first nite. I got to the hospital about 6AM and checked in (dh was with me) went to the OR reception area and got called in to change and get settled by 6:20. The nurse (Noreen??) was very nice and I was glad to see they had an extra large gerney (spelling) for me so all was comfortable. They set up my IV and put on a green Alergy braclet for Morphine on me (important for rest of story). Noreen said that Dr, Randall will call at 7:10 from car to have them get my hepron and other meds started. The p[hone rang at exzactly 7:10 and all she said was Hello Dr., Randall, sure enough, it was him. I guess they can set their watches by him!! So they started with some shots and them the ansthesiologist came in to talk to me and dh. Then everything went so fast. Said I love you to dh and kissed him and off I went with OR nurses. Was moved into OR and they scooted me over and I remember we were chatting about something, I think it was about doctors height, Dr. Randall is not the Jolly Green Giant!! LOL, anyway that is all I remember then I woke up to the worst cramps in my stomach I have ever had in my life. It hurst so bad, it nearly brought me to tears. I don't remember much about the rocovery room, thank goodness. I went to ICU (standard with Dr) and got settled in a glorious bariatric bed. It was heaaven sent, I can't imagine getting up from a reg bed, this was awesome. Dh, Mom, Dad and daughter were with me till about 9PM. Then they almost killed me. I cannot stress enough, ASK WHAT THEY ARE GIVING YOU EVERY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The IV nurse came in about 7pm and changed my demoral PCA med. Apparently, she put in morphine, instead of demoral, but it was set up to give me a dose of demoral, which is five times more than a morphine dose, BIG MISTAKE. So I was getting five times more morphine than than you are supposed to get. I felt it getting really weird and could not even dial the phone. I told the nurse I felt like I was in High School!!! I was soooo high, I had NO pain, and could have run a marathon at this point, but was way too high. About 11pm, the ICU nurse came in and told me what happened. They shut off all meds and watched me every 10minutes all night. It is really all a haze and I don't remember much except scared when the ICU nurse came in and told me what had ahappened. Dr. Randall was livid and so was everyone else. If I were a smaller person, I would be dead right now. I am so grateful that she realized what the IV nurse had done so that steps could be taken. I am so grateful to be well. Besides from that, all went extremely well, walked ALLOT AND WALKED MORE. It hurt, but I walked after pain meds were taken and that eased the pain.
