Hello everyone, just wanted to let you know I've posted Emma's

halloween & newly decorated DOC band photos (under Emma Clare).

I've loved looking at everyone else's pictures, so I figured it was

only fair to post my own!

Emma has had her band for a week and a half now, and I think we can

already see a difference. If nothing else, this new peace of mind I

have is incredible, I'm not stressed out while she sleeps....is she

on her flat spot? did she escape from her swaddle & sleep

positioner? Is she getting worse every day? Yikes. I didn't even

realize how stressful it was!

She doesn't seem to even know it's there, which is great. The

hardest part is the quiet stares and the " ohhhh " 's I get from

strangers that are too scared to ask what the band is for. I wish

they would just ask!!! Oh well, I'm sure everyone gets that....I'll

just tell people that it's from a ski accident or something. (She's

very fast!)

I am also in Cleveland Ohio and am glad that Emma is doing so well. We have

our 1st appt on Dec 14th at the clinic to see is my daughter will need

anything done. Curious as to who you see and what insurance you have. Just

in case we need the band.

I know my niece also had tort and the band. She went to Rainbows and to the

therapist . That is all I know. She is 2 now and she looks great!

Emma is adorable and I really love the way you decorated her band.

That is great that you are already seeing progress and you have such

peace of mind now. You must be getting alot more sleep! (I remember

getting up every hour of the night when we were repo'ing Aidan -

exhausting!) You'll stop noticing the stares, and you will be

surprised at how many NICE comments you will get. Last week in the

store a woman told me Aidan must be an angel because he's wearing a

halo - how sweet is that!

Take care,

& Aidan in CT

doc band #2 scheduled for 11/9

Thank you for the reassurance...isn't it funny how we let complete

strangers alter our perceptions of things?

Good luck with band #2 on your little Aidan!

Tish-

We also see at Rainbow, she's a specialist in tort (literally

has written the book) and is absolutely wonderful. She also runs the

only Ohio location of Cranial Tech (DOC Band people) and is really

active in spreading the word on both tort & plagio to the medical

community.

Our insurance is MedMutual, and was able to get us approved the

first time for 100%...she knows what the companies are looking for

and will work really hard for you. Unfortunately her practice is out

of our network (sigh) so insurance will cover 70%, but that's still

WAY better than nothing!

Tish, I don't know how old your daughter is, but I would HIGHLY

recommend that you see if you can get an earlier appointment!

December 14 is a month and a half from now, and time is really of the

essence when dealing with plagio. If you are already on this site,

then you are aware that it is a possibility. If you do decide to

band then you still have to play the waiting game while you wait for

insurance approval, get casted, wait for the band to arrive, etc. I

don't mean to scare you at all, but I wouldn't wait.

If you like, I can give you 's info, where you can contact her

directly and get her insight. I think the Clinic might just refer

you to her anyway...?

I waited 4 weeks from my ped's initial diagnosis until our first

scheduled appointment, and in retrospect it makes me sick to my

stomach. I would do almost anything to get that time back for Emma's

head.

Let me know if I can help in any way! You're the first cleveland

person that i've run into on this site. (Is your niece's last name

Anness, by any chance?)

Thank you for your wonderful reply. I know you are not out to scare me as I

have seen it with my niece so I know the importance. She was also diagnosed

late so I know that the earlier the better. I also have Medical Mutual of

Ohio. I would love to go straight to her if possible. Did you need the

referral for insurance? Cause if I don't I would go straight to her. I am

on a cancellation list but it was the soonest I could get in. I feel like it

is my fault we have waited so long. I kept saying to myself well she doesn't

have tort so it will get better. also my daughter has a FULL head of hair so

it is not noticeable at all when dry. So my brother and SIL didn't really

notice either. Any info you have would be great and I thank you. Oh and no

that isn't their last name. She has been out of the band for a year now.

Tish,

Your ped or family dr can write the referal and the eventual RX if needed. Ours did. We never saw a specialist. Does your insurance require the specialist? If not then I suggest making an appointment with your child's dr. Take the CT severity assesment charts, the AAP guidelines, and some other research. Have a heart to heart with dr. Explain you really would like an earlier evaluation could he just write the referall. I'm sure would be happy to explain her findings to him/her with her recommendations.

I just called and will wait for a call back to see if I can just go to them or need to see the specialist. Hopefully she knows how my insurance works or I will make some calls tomorrow. I know I don't need referrals for regular things but will see.

Thanks!

Tish-

First of all, it is NOT your fault!!!! It's your fault that she's

getting help, that's all! And that makes you a wonderful mom.

With us, we got a perscription from our ped for . That's all

she needed. We had our first appt on oct 9, insurance was approved

oct 11, she was casted oct 16 and got her band on the 25th. Here it

is nov 3 and she's already improving... :)

I would call your pediatrician, see if they'll give you a

perscription for banding & fax it to . If not, then i'm not

sure...call her & see what she recommends...I'm pretty confident that

she will get you around whatever hurdles come your way.

Well I called yesterday and she is going to see Teagan either tomorrow

or Saturday for a free consultation. Then if necessary we will go through

the steps to get it covered by insurance. My brother emailed me and really

thinks she does not have a severe case. She has no misalignment on her face

that we all can tell. But curious to see what she measures and what

says.

Do any of you know of specific measurements that they go by to asses the

cases. So I have some sort of number to go by or is that not how it works?

My brother feels that is a little pushy when it comes to the band and

doesn't want Teagan to unnecessarily be subjected to it. I know my niece was

borderline but also had the tort and a slight bulge in her forehead and

slight ear mis alignment so they chose to go with it. They only did one band

though and suggested two. McKenna now is fine so they are happy with

their decision.

Again any suggestions, observations etc are so much appreciated. I am so

happy to have found this group.

Hello Ladies,

I just wanted to add my $.02, my daughter takes my grandson Chase to Straight Ahead and I have gone to some appointments with her and they are wonderful people! Chase is in his second band and is doing great. His first band was on from April to Sept and he will be in the second band for at least 2 more months. I don't understand the numbers to well but he went from a 24 to a 13. I know he still has a long way to go to get his ears right, but he looks great already. BTW bring him up from Groveport Ohio (3 hrs. one way) every week or two to see and they both love her.

Thanks Billie for jumping in. I think it is great to know people that are going to the same clinic as us and that there is so much support out there. I will keep you posted as to how our consultation goes. I am off on Fridays and am here on line at work. Maybe I will hook up home computer this weekend but otherwise wont be on until Monday to update.

Tish, that's wonderful!!!

I'm so glad you found this group, too! I know it helped me when I

was losing my mind last month...and Billie, thank you for writing in,

i'm glad you've had such a good experience at straight ahead! Maybe

we'll run into each other there someday.

In terms of measurements (and someone PLEASE correct me if I'm

wrong!!!) they take the difference between the head measurements

(front, back, side, etc.) and total it up. Anything over 10mm

becomes a medical necessity and insurance will cover it. Normal is a

0-3mm difference, which we all probably have. 3-9mm is mild, 10-15mm

is moderate, and 15mm+ is severe. They also put the score on a bell

curve (if you remember those from school!) in terms of standard

deviations. Anything over 2SD should seriously be considered, over

3SD should definately be treated.

Emma had a 15mm difference and 2.5SD, so being borderline I think we

could have gone either way. Our family members didn't notice it

until we pointed it out (or looked at her in a mirror), but she

definately was missing volume in the rear and her face had some

assymetry (esp. her cheeks, which repo was helping) what finally

pushed me over the edge was the potential mommy-guilt, thinking I

could have helped her more. I know that I didn't want regets. I'm

still surprised at how relieved I am to have banded Emma, though.

That's not the emotion I was expecting!

Either way, you'll make the best decision for Teagan (great name,

btw!) be it banding or not.

Good luck tomorrow, and please keep us updated!

, mom to Emma, 5 mo.

Thanks Sara. I appreciate all the information. I know my niece was

borderline and what decided for them was her ears were off and they figured

she couldn't even wear sunglasses. So I think that I will get her

measurements and go from there. I am not against the band at all just

obviously would prefer not to have to. But like you said I would feel like

an awful Mommy if I COULD do so something and DIDN'T!

Tish,

That is great that you got an appointment with . My therapist from CT in Charlotte usually used 6 mm asymmetry as the go no go point. Other factors were involved too - is their any facial asymmetry and is most of the asymmetry captured in the measurement. The measurements are 2D while the head is 3D. Sometimes there is asymmetry above or below the measurement line that is not truely captured. Most research says that 0-3 mm is average asymmetry and less than 6 mm is mild.

Let us know how the evaluation goes.
