Guest guest
Good points, Mike. OK, I'll bite... We need an organization that is FIRST open to all EMS certified or licensed personnel who want to join. That one is not hard, and current organizations meet that request. Second, we need leadership in the organization that is strong and aggressive without being derogative and obnoxious. In other words, strong and capable EMS leaders who are willing to lead the charge into battle but who know how to handle opposition without pissing people off on a regular basis. It is wrong to be " politically correct " in some situations, but it is even more wrong to handle things from a negative standpoint. Those leaders also need to hold some political connections with legislators or representatives who will lend an ear to the problems presented. Without some sort of a political advocate, we can just hand up our spurs and put away our saddles cause we will get absolutely nowhere. The leaders also need to be willing to work with all EMS factions to try and get a good feel for the general consensus of need. Do we have this in EMSAT? If so, then we already have a good starting point. If not, then what do we do next? Jane Hill Lets try an experiment > Ok, we have seen what we don't want in an EMS organization. Or think we have. Guest guest
O.K. Mike, I'll give it a try. 1. first a funded mandate declaring EMS a public safety necessity 2. creating or extending a professional association which will be responsive to the needs of all EMS. 3. continuity in EMS without respect to where you work, live or play, volunteer or paid. 4. an association that supports it's members with education, guidance, and defense is need be. 5. a strong voice in the public domain that will be heard by everyone especially our elected officials. I'm sure that there is much else I could given time, but enough for now. Mike wrote: > Ok, we have seen what we don't want in an EMS organization. Or think we have. Guest guest
Mike, I agree with you 100%. I have said on this list more than once, as have others, that we have an EMS organization in Texas. Why re-invent the wheel? We should all join EMSAT. (I need to update my membership myself!) Then, if we aren't happy with EMSAT, we should attend meetings and vote in a new leadership. When we aren't happy with the President of the United States, do we start a new country? No! We simply vote him out of office. What do you all say? I'm mailing my money to EMSAT, and my voice will be heard. I, like Henry, don't always agree with Ron, but Ron is an " Old Hand " when it comes to EMS in Texas. We can like him, dislike him, not care, but regardless, Ron knows " the right people " in Austin. Ron says a lot of things that I'd prefer my leader not say, but he gives a rats posterior. Most of the rest of us just sit and complain about how things are, but Ron's actually doing something. If Ron needs to be replaced as the leader of EMSAT, then so be it, let's vote in someone that's as knowledgeable, and less abrasive. Maybe we can vote to send Ron to Public Relations classes, send him to a self-help seminar, or otherwise " flog him " into submission. Like I said, Ron and I have agreed on issues, and disagreed on more, but he's involved! Are you? E. Guest guest
Sorry. I am confused. Are we gathering information on what we expect from/are looking for in an EMS system organization (i.e.: Employer?) or a lobby-type organization? I'm a quick study, but sometimes confused. Guest guest
OK, count me in. I'll join EMSAT, too. I'm sure my tiny little voice will never affect the winds of change unless I am supporting a strong organization that will represent my interests. I also wonder- if enough of the 46,000 Texas EMS personnel would join EMSAT, do you think we could get a good group rate for health insurance? Guest guest
Well...three responses since the 21st on my question. Think they are somewhat representative though, so let me continue with what I had in mind. Seems like those responding want an association that will allow us all in and treat us all fairly. The association should be politically active on issues affecting EMS, with appropriate political connections with the state (and federal) folks. Education was mentioned as well as guidance. Availability of legal assistance was stated in one response. These are paraphrased, so if I did not state the exact objective in a response please don't start another feeding frenzy. OK....does EMSAT do the things mentioned? If so, then we should join up and make it work. If it does not, then we should join and change it to the association we want. Sitting on the sidelines (and I am there at this point as well) and not joining is not the thing to do. is right....either way...EMSAT is what is happening right now association-wise in Texas. Please allow me some soap box time too....gonna do it anyway. I am overwhelmed at the strings I have seen moving through this list. The attacks are silly and pointless. Something we must all remember is that we all already have something in common......a patch. This patch shows we all have taken the time and expense to help others when they need assistance. The patch make look different on each of our shoulders, but it still means we care. Why don't we treat our own differently than those we see during our shifts? If we truly believe in what we do, we should help those among us as much as those in the streets. If someone can't spell, help them find the " spell checker' in their e-mail program. If they don't understand a concept, law, or other type of statement, then we should explain it to them. What is up with keeping the loaded AK-47 next to our computers pointed at EMS folks? We don't necessarily have to be buddies with each other, but we do have to respect what each of us has done.....we have promised to help those in need. Lets start doing this with our own. 'nuff said Mike Longview, Texas Lets try an experiment Ok, we have seen what we don't want in an EMS organization. Or think we have. We have bashed moaned and complained. Guest guest
Mike, Do you are anyone on the list have the time and place of the EMSAT meeting on the 30th? I deleted too fast and can't locate my hard copy. I do plan to attend , I just need the time and location. The thread of conservation may have died, but my zest to make a difference has not.
