Guest guest
Hi : Good question you posted and you are very brave to ask it. Please don't feel guilty. I agree with entirely. It is my understanding that the term " blighted ovum " is really kind of a " catch-all " term that may in fact be over-used and really describes a number of situations. Those in which there is an attachment problem and the ovum doesn't get enough oxygen and/or nutrients from the placenta and those in which the placental development is fine but there is a genetic " error " in the ovum itself that causes it to fail or cease to develop. If the placental development is good then the HCG numbers may very well continue to rise despite lack of normal ovum development. This is sometimes called " missed abortion " . A very good friend of mine experienced this....was experiencing PG symtoms and getting bigger and everything else and then, at 12 weeks they discovered that the ovum had " died " at approximately 8 weeks and yet her betas had continued to rise. Please dont' worry, I am sure such was your case..... Gwen
