Guest guest
Sorry, didnt catch your name. Anyways, I wish the basic luck! He may have business management experience you dont know about! Jay Hoskins Police Officer EMT EMS Instructor jhoskins@... Hubbard EMS Rural Hill EMS, Inc. hired a three month BASIC to run the service. They turned down medic with 24 years experience. They must not want to have the service run well or they want total control. They should be in trouble soon. They are supposed to start the service Jan. 1, 2002. Don't need EMS in that part of Hill county next month.
Guest guest
To RUN a service the skills needed may not be EMS skills at all. Basic may be fine if this person has good admin, personnel, and management skills. I would generally like to think the person in a particular job is the best, most experienced in that job. Unless there are problems, I'd rather have the 24 year medic in the truck that comes and gets me. But, maybe I want a person with NO EMS experience that is real good at getting equipment bought, put in the trucks, personnel scheduled, bills managed, etc., if the uncertified person has those skills and the medic doesn't. =Steve= " J. Guest guest
Managing an EMS isn't about IVs and Intubations, it's about dollars and cents. Perhaps if the 24 year medic had a business management background, they would have the position. It is never too late; if the 24 year medic takes some business related courses, and seeks opportunities to expand themselves toward a management track, then they can get the job they desire. There are lots of opportunities to take advantage of distance learning, which bypass the " I can't get off from work to go to school " argument. Good luck to the basic, hope they do a good job. If they don't, they will be replaced. That simple. God, bless America No evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death. Guest guest
Management skills are needed to run a service. However, you don't have any experience in EMS as a provider how will you understand your staff (Trust me experienced field medics are very hard to understand and to supervise/lead/mentor what ever word you want to use). There is obviouly a balance that has to be made. I too wish this brand new EMT all the luck with their new endeavor. It may be a bigger task then they realized! Guest guest
I know the 24 year medic and he has started services and has many years of management in hospitals, business and EMS. But he would want to be in charge and it is my understanding that they (the board) wanted to run things. The medic would have moved there and added two medics to the town. It is their choice, the medic will find something else to do. That is not a problem for him. I wish Hubbard Good Luck and will not not mention it again. > Managing an EMS isn't about IVs and Intubations, it's about dollars and > cents. > > Perhaps if the 24 year medic had a business management background, they > would have the position. > > It is never too late; if the 24 year medic takes some business related > courses, and seeks opportunities to expand themselves toward a management > track, then they can get the job they desire. Guest guest
I guess The question you have to ask yourself is; is this 24 years of experience, or 1 year of experience repeated 24 times. Boards and Councils have many reasons for the decisions they make. Stop one of them and ask. It couldn't hurt. EMS is notorious for taking our best paramedics and making them supervisors. But, just because you're a great paramedic, doesn't make you a great leader. All you can do is give the guy a chance, you might be surprised. Guest guest
Do you have a number to contact this service? Guest guest
Does anyone know who the basic is? I will say that this does not surprise me in the least. I too have a feeling that from what I have heard that this service will not last very long. It is my understanding that they want to control the service, and that they were going to have to pay $7500 just to the ambulance that they will be using running again. This came first hand from the company that sold them the truck. So, this should tell you that they are alread starting off the wrong way. Had they started this process when Southern Hill County EMS, Inc. closed, they would have had a brand new mini-mod ambulance to use. However, they sold everything and are now starting from the ground up with equipment and ambulances. Unless things have changed, there is not that big of a call volume in that area, maybe one call per day. But this also depends on other things also. As we all know there are certain times that we make more calls than others. It will be interesting to see how this service goes. Just my thoughts Tim > >Reply-To: >To: >Subject: Re: Hubbard EMS >Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 22:27:52 -0800 > >Do you have a number to contact this service? > >Joby Berkley > Hubbard EMS > > > > Rural Hill EMS, Inc. hired a three month BASIC to run the service. > > They turned down medic with 24 years experience.
