Tommy,

That man's writing may be posted in a few weeks. I have to get

permission from the magazine that his piece was published in. He

pointed out that while AA may be a psychologically coercive

organization with a cult like indoctrination process, many people need

a support group when first quitting drugs/drink. It's very hard for

many people in the beginning. He also pointed out that since groups

are separate entities, there are some groups which are helpful, and

others which are decidedly harmful. I imagine the helpful ones avoid

the gloom & doom of the program and focus on the support/healing

aspect. AA is too nebulous for a black & white perspective. There's

too much grey area which needs to be acknowledged. Maybe the new angle

of the site will help those people who really feel a need for a support

group, yet have no choices besides AA in their area to at least pick a

group which is on the helpful side, to be truly cautious about what

they take in and what they don't, and to leave when feeling better,

without letting the program overtake every aspect of their lives.
