Guest guest
I have had my son in 2 helmets now and never had a stink or redness problem. I have always used unscented wipes w/ aloe to clean out the helmets, and either let them air dry or use a blow dryer on warm (obviously blowing far away) to dry the helmet. I swear by this method. Both orthotists for the CranioCap and Hanger Band ok'd this no problem. And from what I understand, the StarBand is very similar to the Hanger Band. I see absolutely no harm in using the unscented wipes, and it's a LOT easier than washing w/ that Aveeno shampoo everyone is talking about to get the stink out. Like I said, we've been thru 2 helmets now and no stink, not one odor. I also use Gold Bond Medicated Itching Powder to line the helmets (kinda like when you flour a pan when you bake bread, but you don't add the butter! lol) before I put it on Jaden. It helps w/ any itching, sweating, and helps to prevent skin breakdown. It also has a nice menthol smell to it, which is a natural deordorant, and I think has helped prevent odor in the helmets as well. Wipes and Gold Bond. I swear by this method. ~Amy, mommy to Jaden 14 mo's MN CranioCap Grad 8/13/04 started Hanger Band 11/5/04 tort resolved w/ minor tilt/still in PT mild scoliosis almost resolved --- In Plagiocephaly , " cstevens6969 " <sstevens@e...> wrote: > > We just got the starband and I have been reading posts about cleaning > the Docband and not to use soap or even get the Docband wet. Guest guest
Hi , My orthotist told me to just use mild baby shampoo and water for daily cleaning and use the alcohol once a week. I use a washcloth with shampoo to scrub and then rinse it under the faucet. It gets really wet everyday. I wipe it dry with a towel and let it air dry for the remainder of the hour. We have done this for 6 weeks now and haven't had a problem with stinky band or rash. We didn't even have to use the alcohol yet. It definitely can get wet, the material is not porous and won't retain water. Guest guest
I copied (see below) the following from Orthomerica's website as I've never heard of using anything but alcohol to clean them. Natasha How do I clean Orthomerica Cranial Remolding Orthoses? The cranial orthoses manufactured by Orthomerica can all be cleaned with 78-99% rubbing alcohol. Wet a soft cloth with the alcohol and vigorously wipe out the entire inside of the orthosis once a day when you remove the orthosis for your baby's bath. This will help prevent bacteria from building up on the inner liner and will reduce the odor that is sometimes present. Make sure the alcohol is completely dry before placing the orthosis back on the baby's head. If you live in a sunny climate, place the band in the sun after cleaning it to help it dry. The baby's head should be washed daily with a mild baby shampoo that will not hurt the eyes. Aveeno shampoo, or Tea tree oil shampoo made by a company called can soothe some scalp irritations that can occassionally occur because of heat buildup and perspiration > > > > We just got the starband and I have been reading posts about > cleaning > > the Docband and not to use soap or even get the Docband wet. Guest guest
Hi As far as I know, you don't want to use water on any of the bands that have foam inside. Guest guest
, I'm glad you posted, because it's an important question - not all orthos or different brands of bands/helmets have the same recommended cleaning regimen or products! I see your question was already answered, so I just wanted to post and ask if your daughter's red bumps have faded.
