Need Relieving first week

Hi there

I'm not entirely sure about the red and white you are referring to,

but it could be couple of things:

1. It might be heat rash, which looks like red raised lumps and

patches, sometime with white centres- this looks worse than it is,

but it really irritates babies and they can go mad scratching. The

band causes them to sweat more, and some babies seem especially

sensitive to this. My daughter had terrible heat rash the first week

and we had to run out to buy a portable air-conditioner to keep her

cool. You might be thinking this is not the weather for heat rash,

but babies can get equally sweaty in centrally heated rooms with

normal clothes on. Your child will adjust to the temeperature

increase, but it might take a couple of weeks or more.

The advice is: keep the room as cool as possible, dress the baby as

lightly as possible (just a onsie, or all-in-one) or thin cotton

clothes and take the band off and wipe it down every so often. I

would take the band off until heat rash had gone- it will clear up

very quickly if you keep the baby cool- within a day or sooner. It

is annoying to have to take it off when you want to get going, but

if you don't, you can have far worse problems with skin irritation

and breakdown, and this will delay treatment firther. I used to take

my daughter's band off at the first sign of trouble, and her

correction has been amazing.

2. If there are red patches in specific areas, say on the side by

the ears or one particular spot, it could be the band rubbing on the

skin and causing irritation. The usual rule of thumb is that if red

patches don't disappear within an hour of the helmet being off, then

an adjustment is needed and you need to go back to the orthotist.

Often people do have to have a couple of adjustments early on and it

is really worth ensuring you have a good fit, again to avoid

problems with skin breakdown which will stop treatment.

There is a document under Files about the baby's first week in the

band, so there will be some more advice there.

The key, though, is not to leave it. Take the band off and contact

the orthotist immediately if these simple tips do not help (and

straight away if you think it is due to rubbing). One hour with it

off now might save several days later waiting for skin to heal!

Hope this helps- good luck with this. It would be lovely to know

more about your baby-if you do get a chance to share this or send

some photos, we'd love to see.

I've heard the aveno oatmeal treatment shampoo works great. Is it cradle cap or eczema?

I second the aveeno oatmeal tx. You can either take the actual

oatmeal and mix it into a paste and put it on the head. Leave it

for a bit and wash it out.
