Re: HC at night - Adrenal crash ??

Hi

I wrote my original post at 3:30am (UK time) and have had a chance to

think about things since. My doctor reduced my thyroid dosage as he

though I was hyper, and I think this has stressed my adrenals. I tried

to keep my same dosage (5, 5, 2.5 , 2.5) but sleeping became worse

over a few weeks. Last week I woke up and still had the shakes after

my morning dose, and I also felt drained during the day. I was waking

up at 3 in the morning!! I did a blood pressure test yesterday sitting

down and standing up, and my standing pressure was lower. I think I've

been in a state of denial as I was half way through weaning off the

hc, but I feel my adrenals have become stressed and so I think I need

to increase my hc dosage again, and take more adrenal glandulars. I've

gone up to 7.5, 5, 5, 2.5 today, and I'll try a smaller 2.5 dose

before bed. I have also upped my thyroid dosage back to the old value.

I hope this is just a temporary thing, and I'd like to get my sleep

pattern back to normal before reducing my hc again. I may wait a month

to see how things go. Has anyone else had problems/setbacks like this?

Thanks

Rod

OK I just answered your forst post and you did not give a full picture.

Now you need ot give labs (thyroid) aso I cna see wha is going on, but I

htink you ar probably right in that lowering thyrodi may have caused

adrneal stress. It may also be that you lowered a bit too quickly for

your adrtneals and they are protesting.

Hi

I'm a bit tired and frazzled this morning so I apologise for the drip

of information.

I was taking 150ug thyroxine and feeling fine, but numbers were hyper.

GP lowered to 125 and t4 went from 26 to 14 (10 - 21). Tsh shot up to

25 from being suppressed (0.35 - 5.5).

When I found out, I upped my dose back to 150, but then the hypo

symptoms kicked in and I felt tired and drained and my sleep pattern

shifted - I couldn't get a full night, wake up 3-5 am. Felt like my

body was using more hc at night, or just not producing as much.

The last week I've been feeling better, and I think within a couple of

weeks I will be back to where I was before, wrt the thyroid. So I kept

steady on my hc dose of 5, 5, 2.5, 2.5 with 2.5 at night, taking

glandulars as well. But last Friday I started to feel shaking after my

morning dose, and it only went after I took my 2nd dose at 11am. Two

days later I woke up at 5am and tried taking 5, before another 5 at

7:30am, and this helped. Then I tried to get more sleep, so I

increased my last dose from 2.5 to 5. Did this for 2 nights, and then

last night I did the same, but I woke up at midnight needing hc. My

body stopped producing any nighttime hc. It had always managed some

before.

I wonder if my rythym is screwed up. So I think I need to up my dose -

I've accepted that now. I don't have any Prednisolone, but do have

some licorice - would this help. Ideally I'd like to get back to

producing my nighttime hc, as I'm sure my body can do at least that.

In terms of my increased dose, how long do you think I'll need to stay

on it before I can start my decreasing again.

Thanks in advance

Rod, one of your BIGGEST problems is Thyroxine! Have you ever had your

Free T3 tested? On thyroxine it is usually VERY low. Us hypos do not

convert well, and eventually it catches up and expresses in adrenal

fatigue and an inability to feel well on synthetic T4 only meds. Having

no direct t3 over time, causes major adrenal stress as they struggle to

balance a hormone system that is out of balance. It is like

supplementing calcium and no magnesium.. sodium and allowing potassium

to go low.

Hi Val,

I talked to Dr PeatField about this when I first went on the HC, and

we agreed to treat the adrenals first. I'm going to contact him next

week and discuss this and the adrenals and see what he thinks about

moving to Armour.

I've increased my daily dosage today to

7.5, 5, 5, 2.5

and it's 3pm and I do feel better than yesterday. I think I may need

10 in the morning, so I'll try that tomorrow, and then stick with it

for a few days to see how it goes. I've just been reading Missy's

Adrenal Journey on the main forum, and it's been a real booster for me

to read about her, and how she dealt with the back slide. She is like

me, a big worrier about staying on the HC too long and wanting to come

off ASAP, and not stress dose enough. I think this is partly what

happened to me, and I hope I've learnt my lesson. I'm going to find a

stable dose of HC and stay on that for 2-3 months, and then wean off

slowly. I'm also going to try the Adaptogenic herbs to help me as well.

Its' funny, but now that I've accepted that I need to go back up and

take a higher dose for a while, I feel a lot more relaxed now - the

acceptance stage after weeks of denial :-)

Thanks

Thanks for all your advice Val,

I'm just in the process of slowly increasing my HC until I feel

stable. Based on my previous dosage, it may be around 25mg. I've

requested an appointment with Dr P next week.

Thanks

Rod,

Where is Dr. Peatfield? I live in Florida. Does he do

phone consultation and can he prescribe hormones

without meeting me?

Still hangin' on in there .

I came off the T3 because of the rapid pulse and started from a v. low dose

and raised slowly.

In the process I discovered it was not the thyroid hormone causing the rapid

pulse but more blood-sugar related I think.

So I am on equivalent of 4.5 grains and, amazingly, no improvement from zero

grains.

Who knows but I am hangin' on in there and live in hope!

Hi ,

He lives in England. He does do phone consultations - I'm not sure if

he has any clients in the US.
