Guest guest
Hi , Why wouldn't doctors make it a regular practice to remove both vestibular nerves when removing an a.n.? Wouldn't this destroy the facial nerve? Are doctors leaving parts of the nerves to try and prevent deafness or facial nerve damage? na Re: ABI & EARL > responds: > > Hi na!! > > Brackmann told me he has had only one person with an AN regrowing where the > tumor was removed and that was because they left one the vestibular nerves. > They make it a practice there to remove both vesstibular nerves when > removing the AN. > > My left side should see no regrowth but my right side was not a " clean " > removal. Guest guest
Hi na!! I don't know why doctor's wouldn't make it a regular practice of not removing both vestibular nerves while removing the accoustic neuromas. Unless, by taking them they would take the hearing or facial function. I need to e-mail Brackmann this week. I will try to remember to ask him. Me along with my two sisters, a niece and a nephew all had our vestibular nerves completely removed during our recent a.n. surgeries. Our facial nerves are still intact and working good. Some of us had degrees of facial weakness following surgery but they have pretty much returned to normal. I will try to get a picture posted of me the day after my second AN surgery, June 1. The tumor was completely removed. They were able to save my hearing and facial nerve and they removed both balance nerves. Blessings, Re: ABI & EARL > > > > responds: > > > > Hi na!! > > > > Brackmann told me he has had only one person with an AN regrowing where > the > > tumor was removed and that was because they left one the vestibular > nerves. > > They make it a practice there to remove both vesstibular nerves when > > removing the AN. > > > > My left side should see no regrowth but my right side was not a " clean " > > removal. Guest guest
Lori, Great question to ask what exactly they do. I do know they control your balance. When they take them out your eyes jump around till they learn to focus. It takes a while to adjust unless your tumor(s) has already taken the nerve and your body has already adjusted. I had motion sickness for three days after the first AN surgery (not a pretty sight). With the nerves gone, I find driving at night a chore unless it is a well lit road. You need a horizon to focus on. Blessings, ----- Original Message ----- > This would be a good Q for Donna Getz, I think she has done a lot of > research on it.
