I prefer the 2 Paramedic truck.

First of all, I'm not perfect, it is always best to have a second set of

Paramedic eyes looking at something too. Sometimes my partner gets a

different take on the call or situation and saves my butt or vice-versa.

Second, it is in the best interest of the customer. Often times the

situation is different then what the dispatcher was given or gives you,

often there are more then 1 patient. This allows us to provided the same

level of care to each patient. That actually goes for all patients. In the 2

paramedic truck system all patients regardless of complaint have the benefit

of having a Paramedic assess and tx them. None of this punting the call to

the basic.

Obviously this is a cost issue from the side of the employer, however you

must decide what is most important, taking care of your patients and the

comfort level of your staff or the bottom line...

I have worked on both sides of this one and prefer a

double Paramedic truck, but who wouldn't? In my

opinion, this set up provides the best patient care.

It allows a second medic to double check your thoughts

and actions, just in case. I've had calls where my

partner has caught something I didn't, and vice versa.

Also, on a really busy unit, it allows for equal

distribution of calls and the associated paperwork,

etc. If a service is a true MICU, then the Paramedic

on a Paramedic - EMT/EMT-I truck must ride every call.

I've been there and it was a busy unit. It was not

fun. There were a lot of patients my partner could

have easily taken, but due to the MICU status, wasn't

allowed to. A double medic truck is a little more

expensive from the employers point of view, but in the

long run they may be cheaper. I remember in the MICU

service, the only people that called in sick were

medics. This created overtime at paramedic pay and

there were seldom, if ever, any overtime at the EMT

level. I think double medic trucks would help to

decrease burn out also, but don't have any scientific

data to back it up. Does scientific data exist in

EMS? :-) Double medic trucks are the way to go!

I agree as I work for a system that only utilizes 2 paramedic trucks. At 2:00am

it is always better to have another ALS minded person to compare ideas with. It

also takes the strain off of a paramedic if he/she isn't responsible for EVERY

singe transport. Just my opinion....

newest medicare/medicaid schedules don't like 2 P trucks. Pays by actual tx

level and not manning level. How cost effective is a 2 P truck by the new

schedule?

Interesting, I can say that I never thought $$$ would be issue about what

someones preference was. If that was misunderstanding on my part... I am

sorry!

Our system is a 2 paramedic system. It is great to know that when you run 18

calls a day, only 9 will be yours. However, the input from an equal partner

always made me feel the stress level at its lowest. Not to mention the

obvious, better for the patient. Just my thoughts

I was fortunate enough to work with a Paramedic partner for

several years. At that point in time, management felt that having a

staff of all Paramedics would be beneficial. It worked out great,

for all of the previously mentioned reasons such as equality in the

number of calls and related paperwork. My partner and I also

developed a great working relationship and communicated oftentimes,

in an unspoken language, as we knew one another so well, that we

really clicked on those bad calls. In my opinion, this was the

greatest arrangement that benefited not only our patients, but us as

well. I feel that we were able to deliver outstanding care to our

patients and had a great time doing it.

As Medicare cuts and other financial difficulties came to rear

their ugly heads, management was forced to split my partner and I and

instead pair us with basics and intermediates. This works out ok,

but it certainly adds to the Paramedic's stress level. When I have

the opportunity to work with a seasoned basic or intermediate, it is

not too bad. Working with brand new basics and intermediates is much

more difficult.

I love to work with folks who are new to the field, but when you

get out on a call with a really sick patient who requires a lot of

interventions, it is pretty tough, especially if you are the only one

who can start IVs, intubate, deliver meds and etc. Especially when

your partner has no clue as to what meds the patient may need and etc.

I do believe that patient care is at its best when there are two

Paramedics on the truck, but I also understand that Paramedics are

more expensive, as they generally make more per hour than do basics

and intermediates.

In a perfect world, with money being no object I think that two

Paramedics on each truck definitley works well for lots of reasons.

I work both ways and have no preference depends on schedule and personal

availability. if you view your self as a professional your patient will see you

as such no matter what uniform your service uses. to me shorts are out as I am

an old fire service person. if some one gives you a funny look because you wear

gloves, just remember the old funeral home employees did wear gloves while they

ate there doughnuts and embalmed some one.

wear your gloves the are good to write on.

come on folks common sense should prevail, shorts no paper is cooperate decision

that allow you to stay in business as most hospitals have stopped change out for

any thing.

Paramedic or EMT. So long as I have a partner I don't care. Lets just get

to work. Good EMT's know when to say Hey partner... Look here.
