Hanger Band and Starband vs. Doc Band

I am curious...I know the Doc Band " holds " parts of the head from

growing as well as allows the flat part to grow more. Do the Hanger

or Starband do this as well, or do they not " hold " . I ask because

someone here said that they had their baby wear the helmet only at

night at one point. I know with the DocBand we can't do that since

it " holds " parts of the head from growing. I am curious if there is a

difference. I have heard of passive bands, but am not really sure

which ones are which. Thanks!

The Starband and Hanger Cranial Band are active bands, too. I know

of a couple instances where the Starband product is modified by the

orth to be a passive band, however. I also have read posts where

treatment protocol included wearing the band at night only at the

end of treatment, but I don't know how common this practice is.

In general terms, an active band does have holding points through

gentle pressure. A passive band/helmet provides a round shape for

the head to grow into, with just static pressure holding points (no

pressure.) It's more accurate to say that the active band provides

IMMEDIATE redirection of growth, hence the more frequent adjustments

of about every 2 weeks are required, since the interior of the

active band butts up to the holding areas more snugly. In passive

bands/helmets, the interior of the product is not as aggressively

designed, and it will take longer for the headshape to grow outward

an up against the holding points, when an adjustment will be

required (passive helmet adjustments are ususally every 4-6 wks, for

example.) For anyone interested, there is a good explanation

of " active " and " passive " in the files section, in a document

titled " What it means to be Dynamic. "

Both products work well, and have been shown to work in studies.

The differences between the two might be an important consideration

for older babies, who don't have many growth spurts ahead of them

(active bands might be a better choice, and some passive bands are

only used up to 14 months of age, for example) or for babies with

severe or complex headshape issues (passive bands/helmets only offer

one helmet for the total treatment, while active bands offer two or

more sequential products which will enable the baby to be treated

for a longer period of time to an older age.) We have tried to

deduce and notate which products fit the definition of active or

passive in the Helmet/Band Database through language in their

product's FDA paperwork, manufacturer websites, emails and phone

calls to the manufacturers, protocol handouts from the various

helmet and band makers, and information from members.

parents evaluating helmet and band products.

I don't know, but when I looked up the Hanger band (because that's the one we will probably use if we get one) at the FDA website, I found this in the approval of the Hanger Band:

"Substantial Equivalence: The Hanger Headband is substantially equivalent to the device classified recently ....and to the DOC Band cleared by Cranial Technologies, Inc."

I don't know if that means they submitted data to the FDA suggesting that it's comparable in terms of effectiveness or if it means it is comparable in terms of the way it's designed.

My son wore a STARband and it " held " the areas that needed to be

held.
