Guest guest
, I may have missed this--too busy to read all posts. But can you tell me what symptoms you had that pointed to a low Folic Acid? This is very interesting. And...........did anyone say why you had low level?? And.....how much Folic Acid are you on now? Will you have to be on this the rest of your life?? Guest guest
I can only gather that my intake has probably been too low for a long ongoing time, since I haven't been doing the 5-a-day veggies very well for a long time now. You can bet that I am really working on that now! I have been doing my own blood tests, plus my own thyroid treatment also and haven't visited a doctor about this. The vitamin supplement that I was taking didn't have any folic acid in it, and somehow I missed this. I'm now taking a separate basic B vitamin liquid supplement which I started out at 800 mcgs for a few weeks, then took it down to the standard 400 mcgs. It is in the form of a sublingual spray. My testing indicated that I don't have a B12 shortage, but I'm still taking a fairly large amt of B12. You don't want to mask a B12 shortage with massive amts of folic acid because, if you ARE short on B12, the folic acid will cover it up, but neurological damage will continue. Plus, you must have adequate B12 to utilize the folate in the gut. Folic acid is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in the U.S., next to iron. Here is the full link. Notice the reference to metabolic function (thyroid) as being a cause. I'm thinking that i probably have a combined cause,i.e., too low an intake plus long ongoing undertreatment of thyroid, plus heavy antibody attacks from both major antibodies (over 1000 on one, then almost 2000 on the other one). By the time it's showing up in the CBCs, as mine did, it's been brewing for awhile, but as the article says, it can go downhill rapidly in around 4 months or so. Look at the symptom part----many of the same symptoms as for hypothyroidism, so it makes me think that either it causes it, or makes it worse. http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic802.htm MARY---folic acid , I may have missed this--too busy to read all posts. OK, you've done a good job of scaring me!! LOL. I am NOT a veggie person, and I spent 17 miserable years poorly treated on Synthroid. I'll be checking my vitamins. At least I do have fruit every day, even if a little. Thanks for the good info, !! Makes me wonder if this plays a part in my memory loss for the past ten years--- certain words like proper nouns are HARD to bring up. Arghhh. Guest guest
I thought I was so nutritionally savvy, until this happened, and I had to really sit back and take a neutral look. One of my main diet faults is that I just can't stuff down all those raw veggies in one day. I know, people say that you will get used to them, but I never could, when i was really trying. Some things just taste horrible to me raw, but they say this is the best form to eat them in. Plus, working full time for yrs now hasn't encouraged hrs in the kitchen. I should have known that this was the one it would be, if I'd been paying attention. There are many factors to look at there, when our folate is being destroyed. For some people, it might be stress alone, but mine has been combined, and if I look at it head-on, it's probably a wonder that I'm still standing up. I think I just got my mom's good genes, but I have really taken them and screwed them up! Guest guest
I can tell you mine came back as an in-born error from blood testing of folic acid. b-12 and folic should be tested together with low ferritin results.
