I think you should make an appointment and SHOW him your daughters feet. Be

sure and bring before pictures to remind him what her feet looked like.

I think seeing is believing!!

Go for it!

Letter to orho....good idea?

My daughter Avery was treated so successfully with the Ponseti

method, that I am tempted to write a letter to the ortho who

originally told us that surgery would be the only way to correct her

feet. I would love to inform him of the Ponseti method, and I

thought a letter would be the most non-threatening way to get the

word out to him. I feel like I need to let him know, since he is the

most widely recommended ortho in my area, and I can't stop thinking

about all the babies he must be treating surgically. What do you

think? Good idea or not? Any tips on what to say?

Thanks,

Janelle

Hi Janelle,

We did the same thing with our old ped ortho. She is a very good and widely

recommended surgeon in our area and we told her our plans and that we were

going to Iowa after 3 months of treatment with her that was uncessessful

without surgery. After our treatments in Iowa, I wrote her a very long

letter about our treatments with Dr. Ponseti. We never heard back but on one

of our trips to Iowa many months later, there she was with Dr. Ponseti in

the hallway! She said that she finally took my advice and got her behind out

to Iowa thanks to our letter and that they were going to be switching to the

Ponseti Method (in part) where she practices.

Now, weather or not they are strictly doing the Method at this point, I'm

not sure, but at least I felt that I wanted to try and help open that door

for the many parents that take their children to her for clubfoot treatment.

It is definitely worth a try!!! Good luck!

Janelle,

I have to agree with Jody on this one. When we informed our peds ortho that we

were going to see Dr. Ponseti, he seemed kind of shocked, but all for it. He

also said he wanted follow up appointments after Judd's treatment was finished.

Well we went to see Judd's ortho in April and he was absolutely amazed at how

Judd's foot looked. Seeing is definitley believing! He wants to see Judd again

in June before we go back to see Dr. Ponseti so he can take an x-ray of Judd's

foot. Although I don't think the x-ray will look any different than the last

one he had, if it can get the doc to open his eyes to a new way of treatment,

I'm all for it!

I'm exactly in the same position. My son was only a month away of having

surgery when I found out about the Ponseti method, so don't have to say that

we never went back to the other Dr. office. My son has been using the splint

all day long for 10 days already and his foot looks great.

I would like to let the previous Dr. know about this method, but some times

I think he knows about it (how come he does not know about it if it is so

known), but just doesn't want to follow it. He is the most widely

recommended pediatric ortho in my area.

Anyway I would also appreciate the recommendations on how to inform him.

I think a letter is an excellent idea and plan on doing the same with

our ortho. I am going to write in a very positive manner, thanking

him for seeing Alison and giving us his point of view on possible

treatment (and send pictures of her corrected feet.) I don't know

about your ortho but ours said he would treat alison surgically. He

brought up Dr Ponseti before we had the chance to mention him and

told us Dr. P was highly respected in the ortho community and

suggested if we were interested in his method that we talk to him

before we proceded with any treatment. He also said he felt Dr

ponseti's method was good in theory but lacked in the practical

application. " There's more to it than just casting " is what he said.

I have to respect the guy for being open minded enough to talk about

other methods for correction other than surgery and want to show him

our success--I think since he was so open minded he would find our

success interesting and be happy for us

I think a picture is worth a million zillion words especially b/4 &

after pic's. You may want to direct them to the doctors nurse or

assistants so they will present the old chart records too.

Also add some of s " internet influence " studies and inform

them they are all wellcome to go visit Dr. Ponseti on a reserved

basis to learn 1-on-1.

Or this could just help them to learn the nearest Ponseti trained

Doc to send patients to.
