Guest guest
No he never has been a candidate for a liver transplant, I'm not sure why. At this stage his body couldn't cope with an operation. > Hi ; > > Welcome to the group, although I wish your Dad's health problems did > not have to bring you hear! Guest guest
Hi ; The reason I asked about whether your Dad has been considered for liver transplantation was that your description of your Dad's condition, including occurrence of esophageal bleeding, seems quite serious and suggests portal hypertension. According to the following article, esophageal bleeding needs interventions such as pharmacotherapy, endoscopic therapy, a shunt procedure (such as TIPS; Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt), or liver transplanation: Bleeding esophageal varices: How to treat this dreaded complication of portal hypertension Ahmed M. Hegab, MD; Velimir A. Luketic, MD VOL 109 / NO 2 / FEBRUARY 2001 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE " Liver transplantation is the only effective treatment for both portal hypertension and liver failure and should be considered in any patient who survives a variceal bleeding episode. " http://www.postgradmed.com/issues/2001/02_01/hegab.htm Sorry to be the bearer of this bad news, but I thought this might be something that you should discuss with his doctors. I do hope that your Dad has been stabilized. Best regards, Dave
Guest guest
They are monitoring and treating the varices and have tied them off and is due to have some injected in a few weeks. Yesterday he vomited some blood and the varices were fine but they discovered a gastric ulcer so this may be the cause of his more recent problems. Recently, I was in the hospital twice for an infection which caused my liver function levels to rise. I was placed on the list for a transplant just in case. I'm a 33 yr old, vice president of a bank in Houston, TX. I hope to gain more understanding and I hope to help others who may have the same problems. I thought that I was alone but I realize there are wonderful people that have the same thing as me, offering me great support.
