I got the results of our last sleep study at the pulmonary doc office and during his last study ( hes 7 ) he had 33 apnea episodes and his sats ran around 67-73% , this was during a 6 hour study. last night we went back for our third study and they put him on 1 litre of oxygen, his sats stayed in the high 90's.

for those of you on oxygen, how much do you use and does it help alot? he actually slept thru the whole night, didnt wake with a headache like usual and felt like he slept so good. is 1 litre usually enough to help?

thanks smurffy

Smurffy,

I am so glad you found something that's going to help

him sleep through the night and his sats were so high.

That is wonderful news! Keep me posted.

I'm on 2 liters for a total of about 8 hours per day. My sleep study

was pretty unremarkable - I have more trouble during the day when I'm

active. I do wake up with a headache though, so I probably could use

it during the night, but I hate it around my face when I'm trying to

sleep!

I do pretty well on that amount. Have been using it about a year and

have not noticed that I am becoming more dependant or anything. If I

don't use it 8 hours per day I do notice it big time. My routine is

about 3 hours when I first wake up, then 2 hours around 1-3:00 and

then 2 hours before I go to bed. The other hour is kindof - whenever -

if I'm out doing errands, I keep it in the car to use between

errands etc.

My pulmonary doctor didn't have a clue what to do for me (I saw him

before they suspected mito - haven't seen him since - return for

checkup pretty soon though) I just asked " can we try oxygen? " He

agreed that my sats would support trying it. The difference is

unbelievable. I'm not sure I'd have survived without it. So that's my

story - Anne

i have be on oxygen permanent and continueous since 1997 my sat's drop two 68

in 45 second if me exert me sefl. i use 2 Liters at rest and at sleep and

whenever just not really do anything and i use 3-4L iwth any type of exertion

or i can increase at the night if it just bad and me can't breath but it help

TREMENDOUS. just a hint...... i have a humidified tank in the house and it

make a HUGE HUGE DIFFERENCE of comfort it isn't dry out you nose. i take

coumadin and aspirin and that was reason two qualify becuase i was have nose

bleed without humidify but you can pretty much get it for anything you just

have two ask. all it be is a water bottle attach two the machine in the

house that plug in the wall, and then i have the liquid oxygen tanks outside

two fill if i go out or travel. hoep the info help you. check with you pul

doc but humified is very comfy and i use 1616 tubing which is really small

nasal cannula like for children and i hardly feel it on me face! the other

tubing is very bulky. like i say, they can prettty much get you wahatever

you ask for you just is need of no the thing exist out there.

I use 1 L. of oxygen with my CPAP at night. It has been enough and very helpful. Please remember that oxygen produces free radicals that damage mitochondria, so you have to be diligent with the anti-oxidants.

Hi :) Nikki has central sleep apnea and uses a bipap ST with a rate

of 10 bpm. She uses 2-4 lpm of O2, (humidified)that can be bled into

the bipap mask or used alone via a nasal cannula during the day. The

bipap seems to help a bit with her morning headaches, doesnt

eliminate them entirely due to the fact that she still has some

apneas even on her high pressure (ipap 25). We use the O2 when her

sats begin to drop or when she is dusky. The O2 def pinks her back

up. Which is good, we tell her that blue is just not her best color

hehe. When she was little, we used to have her on only 1-2 lpm.

Good luck with it. Hope it helps him a lot!

Juli (Nik's favorite mom) :)

Dear Smurffy,

I understand about hoping for a little bit of sleep. It really is

hard to sleep when your child stops breathing. When Nikki was little

I would find myself waking up to listen for the alarms " just in

case " . I eventually learned to trust the monitor and sleep in small

snatches of time. My body adjusted and I can get enough rest even

when sleeping in short bursts then waking and answering alarms and

going back to sleep. Naps have become a delicious treat when I get

one. Is your son on an apnea monitor when he sleeps or are you

having to stay awake at night to watch him? I hope you get some

rest :)
