I noticed the posts in regards to PSC and hernias. Here's another question:

How many ever had mono--which, as we know, causes LFTs to be elevated. My

husband Fred contracted mono at age 30. (We had just gotten married, and he

slept through the honeymoon.)

,

Wife of Fred, PSC 03/04 and doing well. (By the way, he's been on fish oil

for YEARS, which hopefully, has helped slow down the PSC.)

I had mono about 12 years ago. Not too bad a case. But I too thought I would never get my energy back.

I had Mono when I was 47, I worked as a secretary at the high school and got it

there, from water fountains I guess. I thought I would never get over it. I

didn't realize it could raise your liver enzymes, who knows maybe it has

contributed to PSC in some way. I wasn't diagnosed until age 68, but I am sure

I had it for several years before that. An interesting theory.

I had Mono when I was 14 yrs. old. Got diagnosed in 2003 with MS and

PSC in June 2004. I've always wondered if that Mono bug is more

harmful than we ever thought!

Dear ;

I agree with you that there is a possible link between mononucleosis

(Epstein-Barr virus) and multiple sclersosis (see for example):

Goldacre MJ, Wotton CJ, Seagroatt V, Yeates D. Multiple sclerosis

after infectious mononucleosis: record linkage study.

J Epidemiol Community Health. 2004 Dec;58(12):1032-5.

PMID: 15547068.

Cepok S, Zhou D, Srivastava R, Nessler S, Stei S, Bussow K, Sommer N,

Hemmer B. Identification of Epstein-Barr virus proteins as putative

targets of the immune response in multiple sclerosis.

J Clin Invest. 2005 May;115(5):1352-60. Epub 2005 Apr 14.

PMID: 15841210.

Earlier (perhaps as long as a year ago, or more?), we discussed the

idea that Epstein-Barr virus might trigger autoimmune hepatitis in

susceptible individuals:

Vento S, Guella L, Mirandola F, Cainelli F, Di Perri G, Solbiati M,

Ferraro T, Concia E. Epstein-Barr virus as a trigger for autoimmune

hepatitis in susceptible individuals. Lancet. 1995 Sep 2;346

(8975):608-9. PMID: 7651006.

It's proposed that autoimmune hepatitis can " evolve " into PSC:

Abdo AA, Bain VG, Kichian K, Lee SS. Evolution of autoimmune

hepatitis to primary sclerosing cholangitis: A sequential syndrome.

Hepatology. 2002 Dec;36(6):1393-9. PMID: 12447864.

So Epstein-Barr virus should not be over-looked as a possible (but

maybe not the only) " trigger " in MS, autoimmune hepatitis and PSC.

Best regards,

I never

had mono. My mother had lots of gastro problems when I was very young. She was

hospitalized at Duke before I was born and after I was born had some stomach(?)

surgery, but that is the sum total of my knowledge. I left when I was 16 so I don’t

really know much about all that.
