Hi Shari,

We have other active Hanger Banders here in the group, so I've added

it to the subject line in hopes that they'll see it and give you

some first hand info!

Hanger offers their own brand of band, the Hanger Cranial Band,

which is an active, FDA approved band. At your daughter's young

age, she should get excellent correction from an active band. Some

Hanger locations use scanning instead of traditional casting - has

your baby already been casted for a helmet and you're just waiting

on receiving the band? If not, you may be interested in reading

about their Insignia Scanning System which is available at some

Hanger locations:

Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics's Insignia Laser Scanning System

The three-dimensional motion-tracking laser scanner, developed by

Polhemus and Applied Research Associates in New Zealand exclusively

for use by Hanger practitioners, incorporates the same patented

technology used by United States Armed Services, which enables image

capture to occur in a rapid and accurate fashion for all patients in

a variety of settings.

I think you can order the Hanger band plain, so that you can

personalize it with your own decorating, or you can order a transfer

pattern onto it for permanent decoration. Another group member who

had a Hanger Band provided this link to Friddles transfers, which I

think Hanger uses for it's permanent decoration of the band:

Friddle's Colouring Paper Patterns for the Hanger Cranial Band

Will your baby be getting a Hanger Cranial Band? Here is a link to

transfer paper patterns that may be available for order for the

Hanger Cranial Band, such as " Planets, " " Butterfly, " " Fly and

Drive, " and " Sunflowers. " Check with your Hanger orthotist to see if

you can order your band in these patterns.

Also, some Hanger locations may also offer to order an provide the

Starband by Orthomerica. The Hanger Cranial Band and Starband are

very similar in appearance. The Starband is also active, and FDA

approved. Here is a link to the Starband info:

I couldn't really tell from your post, since usually there is a

casting/scanning appt., and then a subsequent appt. for the fitting,

but if you haven't already, you may want to review some good

questions with which to interview the ortho for experience, etc. Not

all orthos will have experience or have specialized training in the

product they are providing, beyond what they learned to obtain their

educational degree. Here are some links to some sample questions:

The quality of treatment available varies widely for children with

plagiocephaly. One way to avoid pitfalls is to be aware of them.

Orthomerica's Questions for Parents to Ask a Prospective Orthotist

Feel free to print out this list of questions and refer to them

during your initial consultation with the orthotist. Establishing

and maintaining open lines of communication will enhance yours and

your child's experience with a cranial remolding orthosis.

Questions To Ask The Doctor and Orthotist/Clinician

Once an official diagnosis is made and a course of treatment is

planned, many children are referred to an Orthotist or Treatment

Facility in order to obtain cranial orthosis. Here is a list of

questions to ask the Orthotist/Clinician.

Would you let us know how your baby's appt. at Hanger goes? Which

location are you going to?

Take care,

Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy)
