Was it some attempt to scare her out of her depression? What the heck??? Aloha SG Mama! Believe it or not, Oregon is (I think) the ONLY state that has actually made it a possibility for a person to get assisted suicide. I know it sounds like something out of a horror movie, so I copied and pasted some information below and then I put the link to another site so you and/or others could read more in-depth information. As bizarre as it sounds, her psychiatrist did nothing wrong. Here's some info from one site: --------------------------------------------- In 1994, voters in the state of Oregon approved a ballot measure that would have legalized euthanasia under limited conditions. Under the Death With Dignity law, a person who sought physician-assisted suicide would have to meet certain criteria: The person must be terminally ill. The person must have six months or less to live. The person must make two oral requests for assistance in dying. The person must make one written request for assistance in dying. The person must convince two physicians that he or she is sincere and not acting on a whim, and that the decision is voluntary. The person must not have been influenced by depression. The person must be informed of " the feasible alternatives, " including, but not limited to, comfort care, hospice care, and pain control. The person must wait for 15 days. Under the proposed law, a person who met all requirements could receive a prescription of a barbiturate that would be sufficient to cause death. Physicians would be prohibited from inducing death by injection or carbon monoxide. The NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE COMMITTEE, supported by the Roman Catholic Church, obtained a court INJUNCTION to delay implementation of the measure. The law stalled in the appeals process. In the meantime, the measure was not enacted. In 1997, there was a second public REFERENDUM, and the law was enacted. Within 24 hours of the announcement of the results, state officials had forms for physicians to record instances of assisted suicide. These were later distributed to physicians in the state. The form is entitled " Request for Medication to End My Life in a Humane and Dignified Manner. I hope this helps: http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/pas/faqs.shtml Stay as low on that infamous pain scale as possible this holiday season you all. I know it's harder to do this time of year but not impossible! Aloha Just For Now, Wayne
Guest guest
That's what I'm trying to figure out. If it was designed to scare her out of her depression it was really inappropriate. Carolyn Eddy " Sweet Goat Mama "

Was it some attempt to scare her out of her depression? What the heck??? Carolyn, What state was the euthanasia Doctor from? I forgot how to spell his name but didn't they try to pass a law and I never kept up with the criteria for allowing this instances but I know the requestors would have to go through a hearing before a judge for right to make life decisions and competency issues. I know and trust you and know you would not just say this if it were not true as you know it. Now, this lady needs to report her counselors to their credentialing agency and she also needs to contact her insurance carrier and let them know. This lady does not need to have any medications so she can euthanasia herself. I also know the procedure and this is scary as supposedly the people step back and let the requestor carry it out and it is video taped. No matter what, this is not appropriate counseling practices even in kidding. The criteria for seeing a patient in a patient concerned of taking their life are, " Are they safe or safety to others " and the concern should be the safety of the patient. These Doctors are unethical or this lady needs to clarify this and ask them to write down the request for the euthanasia so she can get her primary care Doctors approval. This will show them and they should get what they deserve. Aren't you concerned about your friend and as a Nurse, you know you should follow up is she is making up things or getting them wrong, where she normally would not. This is scary and I will try to research the Euthanasia legislature requests or background and let you know what I found. These are not people she needs to be around trying to relieve her depression. I mean I have heard people jokingly say oh, I am okay considering the alternative but both you and I know in Medical Ethic practices and the training we have as Nurses and Health Care Professionals, it is NEVER appropriate to joke about his to a patient or client in this setting or others, and it is highly unprofessional. I have said " Oh just put me out to pasture " but I am going to watch these remarks with people like that around. Let us know what you find out also. Guest guest
I can see using euthanasia for someone who is going to die in lots of pain but to suggest that to someone who is not is just plain wrong. Depression hits everyone at one time or another. That doctor needs to be reported to the medical board. Gentle hugs, Ms.Katurah > Carolyn wrote: This was in Oregon last week. Guest guest
I talked to her again today and she stands by her story. She says she's not interested in their offer, but that there were 3 doctors offering to give her papers to sign. I now have her primary care doctor, who was apparently not involved and I am going to call her tomorrow and report. This woman may be in a lot of pain but she is ambulatory, drives, and rides horses, for pete's sake. She is depressed because she does not have a boyfriend, which is not a good reason to kill yourself, IMHO. Guest guest
I do not have any problem with euthanasia as an option but this is not fitting the circumstances at all. Carolyn Eddy " Sweet Goat Mama "
